Lot 486

Lot Description

A Queen Mary I silver Apostle spoon, the fig shaped bowl with slightly tapering facetted stem, the Master Apostle terminal with pierced nimbus and traces of gilding. Hallmarked London 1556 with the maker's mark of a crescent enclosing a mullet for Nicholas Bartholomew. Length measuring 7 inches (17.5 cm), weight 1.6 ozt (51.5 ozt).

Postage: Auction Default

Weight: No

Total lot weight: No

Overall the spoon appears in pleasing condition. Some expected rubbing with loss of definition to the Apostle, bowl and details of the spoon. Much of the detail to the Apostle terminal remains. Doming of the nimbus. Traces of gilding to the terminal. Part of the leopards head to the inner bowl has been erased. A little dimpling to the bowl. There is some wear to the bowl edges, now a little asymmetrical in appearance.  'V' joint just visible under breath to the top of the stem/base of the terminal plinth, two notches also present here on the reverse. Considering age, the hallmarks to the stem reverse appear in most clear and legible. The condition stated above is also demonstrated in the 8 additional images available to view online, if you would like any of the images in higher resolution or have any further questions please do not hesitate to contact the department.
