Lot Description

A Victorian silver combination vesta case and whistle, the slim oblong form engraved with foliate scrolls surrounding an inset oval panel to the front with enamelled hunting scene of a man on horseback, galloping, and two hounds running at his side, with whistle to one end and snapshut hinged lid to the other. Hallmarked to the reverse of the lid William Neale, Chester 1888, with a further Duty mark to reverse of case. Length measuring 6.7 cm, gross weight 23 grams.

The case appears in fairly good overall condition, displaying some tarnishing and surface wear, marks and scratches consistent with age and use. Heavier tarnishing to interior. A couple of slight surface dints and surface rubbing to the decoration from general handling with some slight loss of detail. The surface of the enamel with many quite deep marks and scratches and a pitted appearance throughout. The snapshut hinged lid appears in good working order and closes flush. Small hole in the metal just below the rim, near to the hinges. Hallmarks are quite tarnished but clearly legible.
