Lot Description

A silver and silver-gilt commemorative goblet for Ely Cathedral, designed for the thirteenth centenary of its foundation, the circular tapering bowl with applied relief of a mermaid holding the three keys of Ely, and raised on a spread octagonal stem with wave effect decoration on a textured ground. Hallmarked Aurum Ltd (John M Willmin), London 1973 and further stamped Aurum, limited edition no. 353/673, with certificate. Height 6 1/2 inches (16.5 cm), gross weight 16.46 ozt (512 grams).

Appears in fairly good overall condition, displaying some general light surface wear, marks, scratches and tarnishing. A few minor surface and edge nicks and some heavier scratched marks to some areas. Hallmarks located to underside and are clear and legible.

Also impressed to underside, 'Number 353 of a limited edition of 673 made by order of the Dean & Chapter of Ely to commemorate the thirteenth centenary of the foundation in 673 AD.'
