Lot Description

Two mid-Victorian silver mugs, each of baluster form to a footed base and similarly embossed with flowers, foliage and scroll motifs enclosing a presentation engraved cartouche, with foliate capped double scroll handle. Hallmarked Henry Holland (of Holland, Aldwinckle & Slater), London 1860. Height 5 1/4 inches (13.5 cm), weight 18.58 ozt (578 grams).

Both with quite heavy tarnishing throughout, and displaying general surface wear, marks and scratches commensurate with the age and use. A few minor dints and bumps. One mug with some slight compression around the join of the handle to the main body and slight knocks to rim near to top of handle. Hallmarks to both clear and legible.

Engravings are contemporary to dates of the mug and both presented to Private James Turner of the 8th Gloucestershire Rifle Volunteer Corps for the best shot of the Corps, one dated March 25th 1861 and the other dated April 9th 1861.
