Georg Jensen (1866–1935) was a Danish silversmith and designer renowned for founding the prestigious company that still carries his name. Known for its high-quality silverware and jewellery, the Georg Jensen brand remains a symbol of timeless elegance and craftsmanship.
From Apprentice to Master: Georg Jensen's Early Years
Jensen’s journey into design began early. Born in Raadvad, Denmark, in 1866, he was the son of a knife grinder. At just 14 years old, he started a goldsmithing apprenticeship in Copenhagen with the renowned firm Guldsmed Andersen. By 1884, he had completed his training and became a journeyman.
Rather than immediately pursuing silversmithing, Jensen enrolled at the Danish Academy of Fine Arts. He studied sculpture under Theobald Stein and later ceramics under Joachim Petersen. His time at the Academy helped develop his distinct artistic vision, blending fine art with craftsmanship.
The Tragic Loss and Career Shift to Silversmithing
After his wife’s untimely death, Jensen faced financial difficulties. Despite briefly opening a pottery studio in 1898 with Christian Petersen, the venture was not profitable enough to support his family. In 1901, he designed his first piece of jewellery, marking a pivotal moment in his career.
In 1904, Jensen took a bold step by investing the little capital he had into opening his own silversmithing business in Copenhagen. This marked the beginning of the world-renowned Georg Jensen brand.
Art Nouveau and Timeless Elegance in Jewellery
Jensen’s designs were deeply influenced by the Art Nouveau movement, which favoured organic, flowing, and sinuous forms. His background in both metalwork and fine art allowed him to combine hard-edged materials like silver with the softer, natural shapes typical of ceramics. This unique fusion resulted in jewellery and silverware that stood apart for their beauty, functionality, and innovation.
His serpentine designs, often inspired by nature, are some of the most recognisable in the world of silver. Through his pioneering work, Jensen established a lasting legacy that continues to influence contemporary jewellery design.
Georg Jensen's Legacy: A Master Silversmith
By the time of his death in 1935, Georg Jensen had cemented his place as one of the most important silversmiths in the world. His legacy lives on in the continued production of high-quality, beautifully crafted silver jewellery and the ongoing popularity of his pieces in jewellery auctions, particularly those at Fellows Auctions.
Today, collectors and enthusiasts alike continue to celebrate the timeless elegance of Georg Jensen’s work. This ensures that his name remains synonymous with superior craftsmanship and artistic design.
