The Kutchinsky Family’s Journey and Craftsmanship Legacy

Hirsch Kutchinsky and his family arrived in England in 1893, bringing with them extensive experience as jewellers to the court of Ludwig of Bavaria. They quickly established a jewellery business in London’s East End. In 1928, Hirsch’s son Joseph, a talented diamond cutter at just 14, joined the family business. Joseph’s sharp business sense and focus on quality craftsmanship and customer service played a key role in the company’s success.

Kutchinsky's Post-War Jewellery Revolution

In the 1940s and 1950s, Kutchinsky’s designs were bold and ostentatious, reflecting the end of wartime restrictions. The pieces featured diamonds, vibrant gemstones, and materials like coral and turquoise. Notably, they created comical animal-themed brooches in 18ct yellow gold, accentuated with enamel. Kutchinsky also gained a reputation for intricate gold metalwork with sculptural designs. The shop on Commercial Road became a hub for original jewellery during this period.

The Rise and Sale of the House of Kutchinsky

In the 1950s, the company relocated to Brompton Road in Knightsbridge to stay ahead of the competition. Joseph later brought his two sons into the business. The House of Kutchinsky became highly sought after by London’s elite and customers from the Middle East. This market proved lucrative until the Kuwait invasion in 1990, which led to financial losses. This resulted in the business being sold to a rival, Moussaieff Jewellers Ltd., in 1991.

Kutchinsky’s Enduring Appeal Among Collectors

Today, Kutchinsky’s jewellery, particularly the animal brooches, remains highly prized by collectors. The company’s commitment to high-quality craftsmanship, attention to detail, and bold designs has solidified its legacy.
