The Royal Oak style of watch was first introduced in the early seventies by the Swiss watchmaker. Designed by the renowned Gerald Genta, the Royal Oak has undergone some redesigns and upgrades over the years but is still an iconic motif for Audemars Piguet.

This particular 18ct yellow gold watch features an exhibition case back, meaning you can see the movement. The alluring tourbillon mechanism can also be seen through the watch’s dial, ensuring the elegance of this movement appreciated from both the front and the back of the timepiece.

Laura Bishop, Watch Manager at Fellows Auctioneers, said: “I am proud that we have achieved a great result for this exceptional watch. It is the most expensive item to have sold in a timed auction to date. It’s no doubt that this Audemars Piguet is one of the most elegant watches ever designed. This is reflected in the prices that we regularly see these watches achieve in our specialist auctions. You can immediately tell the beauty of this watch by simply looking at the front dial. It has a phenomenal and rare movement and I am thrilled that someone bought this beautiful timepiece.”
