Condition Report

An early 19th century diamond ring with earlier carnelian intaglio. The carnelian cabochon, carved with an ant, to the old-cut diamond sides. Estimated total diamond weight 0.25ct. Weight 2.8gms.

  • Intaglio believed to be Roman, possibly 2nd to 3rd century A.D. Ants were a symbol of the Goddess Ceres, along with having magical properties to combat pink eye, warts, gout and arthritis.

    Purchasing information
    • Overall condition fair to good. Some surface scratches and discolouration in keeping with general age and wear.
    • Band shows evidence of repair/ resize.
    • The intaglio mount has significant wear to both sides, showing through to the front of the ring on one side.
    • Diamonds bright and well matched.
    • Individual size and setting of diamonds prevents accurate colour and clarity assessment.

    • Carnelian in good to fair condition with moderate abrasion abrasions and a moderately shallow chip to the edge of the cabochon, near the head of the ant.

    • Ring size I 1/2.
