Description

Condition Report

A Military Cross Medal group awarded to Capt. W. Rawson Hughes (later Major), mounted together on a bar and comprising OBE, 1st type, Military Division ribbon, Military Cross named to 'Capt. W. Rawson Hughes D. A. Q. M. G. 12th Divn.' and dated June 1917, Great War Trio, 1914-15 Star, named to 'Lieut. W. R. Hughes. A.S.C.', British War Medal 1914-20, Victory Medal with M.I.D oak leaf attachment to ribbon, both named to 'Major W. R. Hughes', WWII group of three, 1939-45 Star, Defence Medal, War Medal 1939-45, and a Battles of the Somme Commemorative Medal. In fitted case with accompanying photograph. (9).

William Rawson Hughes was awarded the Military Cross in June 1917, whilst a T./Capt., as listed in the Supplement to the London Gazette, 4 June 1917, page 5480. He was awarded the OBE in January 1919, 'For services rendered in connection with military operations in France and Flanders', as recorded in the 1919 New Year Honours (OBE) List (with incorrect spelling of his name as Bawson Hughes). Appointment of OBE also published in the Supplement to the Edinburgh Gazette, January 2, 1919, issue 13375, page 8, where he is now listed as T./Capt. (T./Major).

It appears that he was from Denbigh, Wales; an article from The Free Press, which was a local newspaper in Denbigh, dated 4th Jan 1919, refers to him as a 'Denbigh Officer' and 'our townsman'. The article reports that he had been mentioned in Dispatches by Sir Douglas Haig, 'for distinguished and gallant services and devotion to duty as D.A.Q.M.G of a fighting Infantry Division in the Field, for the period, February to September 1918'.
