Lot Description

An early Victorian silver snuff box of rectangular form with wavy edge, the hinged lid decorated in relief with a hunting scene of two hounds chasing a rabbit, having foliate scroll engraving to sides and an engine turned base with vacant central name panel, opening to a gilded interior. Hallmarked Edward Smith, Birmingham 1843. Measuring 3 1/8 inches (8 cm) by 2 1/8 inches (5.3 cm) weight 4.07 ozt (126.7 grams).

The snuff box appears in fairly good overall condition, displaying expected general surface wear, marks and scratches commensurate with age and use. Some light tarnishing and heavier wear around edges and corners. Some rubbing, slight flattening and loss of surface detail to areas of the decoration. Some heavier wear and rubbing to engine turned base, splits to name panel along one side and small loss to one corner. Hinged lid appears in good working order. Hallmarks are clear and legible.
