Lot Description

A late Victorian silver vesta case, engraved throughout with foliate scrolls surrounding a vacant shield cartouche to the front, hallmarked William Neale, Chester 1899. Together with a similarly decorated Edwardian example having a monogrammed shield, hallmarked Reynolds & Westwood, Birmingham 1909, a modern vesta case decorated in relief with a semi-nude lady, London import 1990 and a further base metal example. Gross silver weight 2.14 ozt (66.7 grams). (4).

All four cases display some tarnishing and general surface wear, marks and scratches commensurate with age and use. Birmingham example appears in good condition with hinges and clasp in good working order. Chester vesta case with heavier wear around edges and heavier surface wear including to the engraved decoration, the hinged lid is also quite loose and it does not close firmly. The metal example with areas of rust or surface corrosion and visible repairs. The hallmarks are mostly clear and legible.
