Lot Description

A mid-Victorian silver snuff box, the rectangular form with scroll edge enclosing engraved foliate motifs and interlaced patterns throughout and a scroll bordered cartouche to the hinged lid with personal presentation engraving, opening to a silver-gilt interior. Hallmarked Frederick Marson, Birmingham 1874. Length measuring 8 cm, weight 117.4 grams.

Appears in good overall condition, displaying some general tarnishing and surface wear, marks and scratches commensurate with the age and use. Some slightly heavier wear around edges and corners. Decoration generally appears bright and crisp. Hinges appear in good working order, closes well with lid rising very slightly on one side when closed. Some dirt and an areas of dark and heavier scratches to gilt interior. Hallmarks a little rubbed but legible.

Presentation reads 'To Peter Johnston Esq. from his affectionate sons John, Alexander & Robert on the 50th Anniversary of his Wedding Day, Gordon Hall, December, 1881'
