Full Lot Description

An early George III silver cake basket, of pierced oval form with applied gadroon, scroll and flower rim, and raised on foliate-scroll pierced apron and feet, with geometric and quatrefoil pierced sides within floral and bead borders, the swing handle similarly decorated and with engraved crest to the middle. Hallmarked Samuel Herbert & Co., London 1767. Approximate length 36cm, and width 31cm, weight 40.18ozt (1250g).

  • Displaying some general surface wear, marks, scratches and tarnishing commensurate with the age and use
  • Heavier patches of tarnishing to some parts with a little blackening and residues of dried polish to some areas and crevices
  • Some minor surface dints and knocks
  • With some heavier surfaces scratches and pitting type marks to the plain centre
  • Some repairs to the handle and it does not self-support
  • The top of one foot is slightly compressed into the body and is now slightly higher and flares out slightly, consequently the basket wobbles a little
  • Hallmarks located in the pierced decoration and are a little clipped in places; further lion passant to the handle
