An early Victorian silver military interest presentation snuff box, of rectangular form with foliate edges and engine-turned decoration throughout, the hinged lid with raised floral chased border enclosing the engraved inscription, 'Presented by the Sergts. of the 88th Regt. (or Connaught Rangers) to Sergt. Major ? Anderson on his retiring from the Regt. 20th May 1840', opening to a silver-gilt interior. Hallmarked Francis Clark, Birmingham 1838. Measuring 8.5cm by 6cm, weight 5.45ozt (169.4g).
