To travel in style, some may only associate the types of vehicles that take us from A to B. However, for many, it is what we travel with which truly expresses our own personal style.

And when travelling not so light, there has only ever been one brand of choice; Louis Vuitton. 

Here at Fellows, we are excited to announce the inclusion of three hard-sided Louis Vuitton trunks, in our March Designer Collection auction.

Lot 257, a Wardrobe 90 Tout Penderis Homme trunk. First debuting in the 1872 Louis Vuitton catalogue, this model dates from the mid-1980s. Furthermore Lot 259 is a Gemine 12 Paires shoe trunk, which is also dating from the mid-1980s. These icons of luxury travel were first created when the only way to cross the Atlantic was by ocean liner. They were crafted from three different types of wood, with primarily Poplar and Okoume used on the base and lid. They were known for being water-resistant and having shock absorbent properties. They were finished in the house's signature monogram canvas and adorned with brass hardware.

Lot 272, a Louis Vuitton Alzer 80 in monogram canvas. First named after the birthplace of Napoleon (Ajaccio) and later Alzer, a contraction of two cities in North Africa, this piece of hard-sided luggage is the only piece in Louis Vuitton’s catalogue with a removable tray. This allows for better organisation when travelling.

Each of these trunks is handmade, in Louis Vuitton’s Asnieres workshop. Where a small team of artisans meticulously assemble them. Over 500–1000 nails are used to secure a protective lozine fibre edge, whilst re-enforcing the trunk's frame.

Through the ways in which travel has changed immensely since the late 19th century, Louis Vuitton has continuously set a standard for how to travel. Louis Vuitton still produces these trunks today. They are regarded as pieces of art for the high level of craftsmanship and time that a Louis Vuitton trunk demands. Today these trunks are seen used in interiors, as pieces of furniture, as a feature piece of art, or as family heirlooms passed down through generations.
