Mokan, a bay stallion born in 1909 in Hungary, is part of a lineage steeped in thoroughbred excellence. His parentage traces back to two exceptional thoroughbreds—Tokio (1892) and Moneta (1898). Mokan’s lineage carries a unique distinction; he is a direct descendant of Buccaneer, a British-born racehorse who, despite an unimpressive racing career, gained immense fame as a sire of champions.

Buccaneer, after being sold to the Austrian stud farm Gestut Kisber, became the progenitor of over 371 thoroughbreds. The British attempted to buy Buccaneer back due to his breeding prowess, but the Hungarians steadfastly refused. Buccaneer's legacy continued through Mokan, his grandson on both sides, making the stallion a living embodiment of elite breeding in the early 20th century.
Despite limited historical information, Mokan’s achievements on the track were noteworthy. At the age of three, in 1912, he secured victories in the Millennium at Budapest and the Austria Trial Stakes. These wins were significant in establishing Mokan as a strong contender in Hungarian racing, though he was the last in his direct line of Buccaneer sires.
The History of Gestut Kisber
Gestut Kisber, the stud farm where Mokan was born, has an intriguing history. The farm was originally under the ownership of Count Casimir Batthyány, a prominent figure who was executed during the Hungarian Revolution of 1848. Afterwards, the stud fell into neglect until it was revived under the care of Franz von Ritter. In the decades that followed, the farm continued to produce exceptional racehorses, including Mokan.
By 1961, Gestut Kisber was amalgamated into the Agricultural Combine Bábolna, once again focusing on thoroughbred breeding. While the original breed from Kisber continues in limited capacity today, the farm’s rich history lives on through the legacy of horses like Mokan.
Hungarian Racing Heritage
Hungary has a deep connection to horse racing, with its first documented race occurring in 1827. Thoroughbred racing officially began in 1838, and Hungary quickly became a prominent name in the racing world. The country’s most famous racehorse, Kincsem, remains unbeaten, winning all 54 races in her career. Hungary’s racing season, running from April to October, is a major cultural event, with the Kincsem Prize being the most prestigious racing accolade.
Mokan, a lesser-known but important figure, adds to this rich tapestry of Hungarian racing history. These 14ct gold, rock crystal sleeve links are not merely a tribute to an exceptional racehorse but also Hungary’s longstanding passion for the sport.
