A. LANGE & SÖHNE - a base metal WW2 German military issue pilot wrist watch.

Description

Condition Report

A. LANGE & SÖHNE - a WW2 German military issue pilot wrist watch. Circa 1942. Base metal case. Case number FL23883, movement number 210610. Signed manual wind calibre, numbered 210610. Type B black dial with inner luminous Arabic numeral hour markers, outer minute track with timing divisions at five minute intervals. Fitted to an unsigned brown leather strap with base metal pin buckle. 55mm.

The German Air Force, or Luftwaffe, commissioned watches from A. Lange & Söhne, Stowa, Wempe, Laco and IWC throughout the 1940s. These pilots' watches had very specific features, typically very large in size and with an oversized crown for easy operation whilst wearing flight gloves. These custom engineered timepieces, known as Beobachtungs-uhren, or observation watches, were issued to pilots for specific missions and then returned once that mission was over. This example displays a Type B dial, showing minutes at five minute intervals and an inner hour track. The case number, FL23883, is engraved to the case of the watch and identifies it as a navigational military tool.
