A world-renowned architect with the design of some of the world’s most recognisable buildings to his name, Frank Gehry is less known for his jewellery collaborations with Tiffany & Co. Frank Gehry Born in 1929 in Toronto, Canada, Gehry studied his craft at the University of Southern California’s School of Architecture. Though he rejects being considered a ‘starchitect’ (star architect), Gehry has built such acclaim for his architectural designs that he is one of the most renowned architects in the world. A decade after his reveal of the striking Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, Spain, Gehry’s surprise foray into the world of jewellery through a collaboration with Tiffany & Co. was, unsurprisingly, celebrated by jewellery and architecture aficionados alike. Frank Gehry Jewellery for Tiffany & Co. The New York-based Tiffany & Co. has a strong record of collaborating with the best of the design world. Their mid-2000s collection with Frank Gehry continued this success. He took the curves of his ‘Fish’ motif, used in buildings and sculptures like the ‘El Peix’ in Port Olímpic, Barcelona, and created necklaces of multiple fish forms in silver, wood and nephrite jade, and balanced a jumping silver fish on a band ring. Similarly, his ‘Torque’ and ‘Fold’ collections creased folds into ribbons of precious metal to make angular bangles and rings, mirroring on a miniature scale the buildings he has wrapped in swathes of metal sheets. Gehry’s architectural style is known for its complexity, particularly the angles created by his juxtaposition of straight and curved walls. His jewellery collections for Tiffany & Co. are no different: the freeform, curved shapes of the ‘Equus’ pendants and the spirals of the ‘Orchid’ pendants and earrings contrast with his use of layered abstract shapes of sheet metal in his ‘Leaves’ collection – the curves in the sheet creating undeniably autumnal leaves.
