Fellows’ Online Watches & Watch Accessories auction, held on Monday 23rd September, was a white glove sale with every lot selling at a total hammer price of £124,080. This is indicative of the success of watch auctions that take place at the 143-year old family business. With watch parts, tools and boxes on offer, the 456-lot Online Watches & Watch Accessories sale proved there was plenty to appeal to both budding horology enthusiasts and professional watch repairers. Highlights of the Online Watches & Watch Accessories auction included an array of sought-after watch boxes, and groups of watches from a variety of brands, ranging from Seiko to Tissot. With 100% of lots in the timed sale selling, it’s another indication that online timed auctions at Fellows in 2019 are thriving. Online timed auctions of Costume Jewellery, Gemstones, and Online Watches & Watch Accessories have all had very high sold rates at Fellows this year.  Fellows also held a similarly successful live Watches auction simultaneously on Monday 23rd September, which featured 470 lots. The successful live Watches sale had a total hammer price of £108,615, making the total hammer price for both the live and timed auctions £232,695. Steven Yambo, Senior Watch Specialist at Fellows, said: “I am proud that we managed to sell 100% of items in the Online Watches & Watch Accessories auction. The lots in this sale are always in high demand but I never expected such a great result from the sale. The market for second-hand watches and accessories at auction seems to be getting increasingly strong and hopefully it is a trend which continues.” The next Online Watches & Watch Accessories auction at Fellows will take place on Monday 9th December 2019. The specialists are still welcoming consignments. Fellows’ next flagship watch auction The Watch Sale, showcasing timepieces from renowned watch brands such as Omega, Patek Philippe, and Rolex, will take place on Tuesday 15th October.

The April birthstone is diamond, with our Gemstone Sale currently live, we spoke to Oliver Horner, Jewellery Assistant from Fellows’ London office, who gave his thoughts on what’s so special about diamonds: Diamonds are amongst the most sought after and important gemstones, with many factors contributing to their demand. Their unique physical properties include a high adamantine lustre possessed by few other gemstones. The anatomical structure makes it the hardest known substance, making it ideal not only for jewellery, but for industrial machinery. Oliver Horner, Jewellery Assistant from Fellows’ London office. Due to its rare structure, the cutting of a diamond has been perfected to create a set of ideal proportions. These proportions coupled with the high refractive index results in the vibrant ‘fire’ which diamonds are known for. The quality of a diamond is based on the four C’s:
  • Colour – ranging from colourless to yellow/brown.
  • Clarity – how free from inclusions the stone is.
  • Cut – the shape the stone has been fashioned into.
  • Carat weight – how much the stone weighs.
The above is carefully considered when grading a diamond, as these factors heavily influence the price of the stone. Lot 9 – A square-shape fancy brown-pink diamond. There is a great selection of diamonds in our upcoming Gemstone sale on the 26th April 2019 – which is live on our website now. Lot 9, A square-shape fancy brown-pink diamond, weighing 0.66ct is definitely one to watch as the rare pink colour and VS1 clarity make it a really lovely stone. I’m sure the sale will attract a lot of interest as it’s full of beautiful gems.

Fellows’ upcoming Antiques & Collectables sale features our largest collection of Blue John items since 2015. The beautiful Blue John pieces range from multiple brilliantly designed bowls, some beautiful raw specimens, and some pedestal urns. The origin of the Blue John title is still relatively unknown, but it has been used for centuries as a precious stone. Blue John had been mined around the Castleton area in North Derbyshire – the beautiful area situated within the Peak District. There are numerous caverns in Castleton, including the Treak Cliff Cavern and the Blue John cavern, of which the mineral originates. The caverns have been popular for site seeing over recent times and Fellows have on different occasions sold collections of Blue John. The mineral has always been popular at Fellows’ auctions, with our 2015 sale being a prime example, and our upcoming Antiques & Collectables sale is sure to be no exception. A Blue John bowl. Estimate: £300 – £400 A Blue John pedestal cup. Estimate: £300 – £400 Continue reading →
