After working for his father’s London-based jewellery business, Grima went on to create bespoke pieces in the sixties and seventies. These achieved international acclaim. He won various awards for his work, including the Duke of Edinburgh Prize for Elegant Design. Queen Elizabeth II and Princess Margaret both in the past sported original jewellery by Grima. We have sold several items by the esteemed jeweller in the past, which are always popular at auction. His unique jewellery has become illustrious in recent years, with Grima examples often soaring above their estimates at auction. Andrew passed away in 2007, and since then tens of pieces each year have been produced by his family in limited numbers. Annabel Zarandi, Jewellery & Watch Specialist at Fellows Auctioneers, has researched Andrew Grima ahead of the Fine Jewellery sale on 25th March. Arguably one of the most sought-after designers, Andrew Grima’s innovative designs have stood the test of time. Drawing inspiration from organic and geometric structures, his style was easily identified. Semi-precious gemstones such as amethyst and citrine took centre stage over diamonds and commanded attention. It is little wonder he amassed a huge following from Royalty and celebrities alike. His pieces continue to be hugely popular at auction. A mid 20th century 18ct gold citrine and diamond abstract pendant/brooch, by Andrew Grima. Lot 362 in our upcoming Fine Jewellery auction is a beautiful example of a piece of multi functioning jewellery by Grima, a citrine and diamond set pednant which can also be worn as a brooch. The striking citrine is encompassed by Grimas trademark use of textured gold, and scattered with delicate round brilliant diamonds. A stunning addition to an existing collection, or perfect as a first Grima purchase, it is estimated at £3500 to £4500. Annabel Zarandi, Jewellery Specialist from Fellows’ London office, has been researching a fascinating item by Andrew Grima in the 23rd July Fine Jewellery sale. Andrew Grima revolutionised jewellery design and is viewed as one of the most innovative designers in jewellery history. He took advantage of the natural inclusions and colour zoning of a gemstone, features which would have been seen as an imperfection, were now crucial to the composition. His style was defined by organic, sometimes rigid and irregular in structures as well as the use of these semi-precious stones. Unsurprisingly he amassed a cult following amongst the social elite (Queen Elizabeth and Jackie Onassis to name but a few). A 1970s 18ct gold diamond collar, by Andrew Grima. Lot 343 in our upcoming Grima jewellery sale is typical of his bold approach to design. The brushed and texturized gold of the necklace being very much of its era. It is set with a mixture of white and brown diamonds that are scattered across the necklace, which is in keeping with the organic nature of his work. The hinged design allows for easy wear and it sits beautifully on the neck. Its is hallmarked for London, and dated 1974, at a time when Grima was at the height of his success. This will be sold in our 23rd July Fine jewellery auction, and has an auction estimate of £5500 to £7500.

Fellows’ upcoming Fine Jewellery sale on Thursday 11th July features a beautiful 1970s 18ct gold diamond and gem-set ring, by Charles de Temple. Alex Duffy, Jewellery Specialist at Fellows Auctioneers, has been discussing the importance of his work. A pioneering figurehead of the 1960s modernist movement, Charles de Temple is revered as one of the influential designers in bringing bold and abstract jewellery to forefront of fashion. Along with the likes of Andrew Grima, his use of creative technical processes and sheer imagination birthed exquisite and outrageous designs, often inspired by nature, stylised and abstracted into decorative forms that became the trademark of the 60s and 70s. CHARLES DE TEMPLE – a 1970s 18ct gold diamond, emerald, sapphire and ruby ring. De Temple’s imagination made significant waves in fashion and pop culture of the time, notably having jewellery featured in the James Bond film franchise. The wedding band 007 presents to his lover in ‘On her Majesty’s Secret Service’, was a quintessentially unusual piece, skillfully crafted from the techniques he utilised so effectively. This iconic ring recently went to auction, selling for over £50,000 (£52,500 hammer price). That sought-after vision and creativity is displayed to great effect in Lot 240 of our upcoming Fine Jewellery sale. It features an undulating line of textured, recessed panels giving off an organic presence, scattered with emeralds, rubies, sapphires and diamonds, providing bursts of colour and life. Recent years have seen surges in popularity for jewellery of this period, resulting in an ever-growing interest in the works of De Temple and his contemporaries. Their individuality and rarity increasing the likelihood that you won’t find another the same for many years. Keep an eye out for this vintage delight when it goes under the hammer in Fellows’ Fine jewellery sale on 11th July, with an estimate of £1,500 to £2,000. Alex Duffy, Jewellery Department at Fellows

A self-taught jeweller, Andrew Grima revolutionised jewellery design and is viewed as one of the most innovative designers in jewellery history. Andrew Grima Andrew Grima was born in Rome, Italy in 1921 but grew up in London. After working for his father-in-law’s London-based jewellery business, Grima went on to create bespoke pieces in the sixties and seventies which achieved international acclaim. He won various awards for his work, including the Duke of Edinburgh Prize for Elegant Design. He won the De Beers Diamonds International Award an amazing 11 times. His designs were much loved by British society at the time, including The Queen, Elizabeth II and Princess Margaret who both wore Grima pieces in offical photographic portraits. Grima Jewellery Designs Unlike jewellers before him and his contemporaries, diamonds were not the principle gem the piece focused on. For the first time, bold and more unusual gemstones – such as watermelon tourmaline – were centre stage. He championed organic and abstract motifs in his work and made a name for unique designs. His stylish flair wasn’t limited to jewellery. In 1969 he was commissioned by Omega to create a watch collection which is still thought of as outrageous and daring. After his passing in 2007, it remains a much-loved family-run business. His bold and dramatic designs have stood the test of time, with Grima remaining one of the most in-demand brands in the auction market. Grima’s wife Jojo and daughter Francesca continue to create jewellery under the Grima name, celebrating his legacy and continuing to produce beautiful, highly original handmade jewellery. They only produce a small collection each year, limited to 20 to 30 pieces. Grima Jewellery at auction We have sold some wonderful Grima designs in the past. Luckily, the Fine Jewellery auction regularly features unique Grima designs. An 18ct gold boulder opal and single-cut diamond brooch, with textured, stepped surrounds, by Grima.
