Fellows’ record-breaking handbags auction on Thursday the 20th of February, saw house records broke by achieving their highest number of registered bidders yet during their Handbags, Jewellery & Accessories auction. Fellows had 1,130 people registered to bid across multiple bidding platforms. This is the highest number of registrations for a Handbags & Accessories auction hosted by Fellows, as well as the highest number of registrations that they have seen in the past three years. Just a few months ago, Fellows appointed Nicola Whittaker as Head of Handbags, and Patricia Preuschoff as Catalogue Manager. Under their direction, the department has continued to grow, and this record-breaking auction is demonstrative of their success. What The Experts Said Nicola Whittaker, Head of Handbags, said: “It’s wonderful that this auction attracted such a high number of bidders. The Handbags & Accessories department is still in its infancy compared to our other specialist departments so it’s wonderful to be part of its growing success. We have expanded the scheduled auctions to six this year and hope to see the increased interest continue. Consignments for April are open, and we know that sellers will be keen to add items to what is already shaping up to be an exciting Spring auction.”. Nicola Whittaker | Head of Handbags Patricia Preuschoff, Catalogue Manager, said: “I am thrilled by the amount of interest our recent Handbags auction drew! The collection of lots was one of the best ones we have seen so far, and I am delighted that so many of our clients seem to agree. Having over 1,000 bidders was truly exciting, I thoroughly enjoyed watching the bidding unfold. Our Handbags & Accessories department is only continuing to grow thanks to our clients who continue to trust us for authentic bags and excellent customer service.”. With a history dating back to the 1920s, the Chanel flap bag is iconic. Worn by princesses, actors, and women all over the world, the Chanel flap has never gone out of style. Its style is timeless, its silhouette is instantly recognisable, and its popularity is enduring. History of the Chanel Flap Bag Coco Chanel first conceived the idea of a handbag with an over-the-shoulder strap in the 1920s. The story goes that she became tired of holding her handbag in her hands and decided to design an alternative. Apparently inspired by soldiers’ packs, she used a long strap to hold the bag over the wearer’s shoulder. This was a game-changer for handbag design at the time as it allowed women to go “hands-free”. Despite creating this revolutionary design in the twenties, Chanel didn’t debut her flap bag until February 1955. It is from this date that the first model for the Chanel double flap gets its name – the 2.55. In 1982, Karl Lagerfeld joined Chanel as creative director and ushered in many changes to the Parisian fashion house. Notably, he spearheaded a redesign of the classic flap bag, creating the iconic interlocking CC twist lock. Since then, Chanel has continued to innovate new handbag designs constantly keeping the wearer’s needs in mind, whilst providing that signature Chanel flare in design. Every month we are asked by our marketing team to come up with a few watches to include in publicity materials for upcoming auctions. When thinking about what to suggest, it struck me that, despite undoubtedly being immensely popular watches, we have never written about the Chanel J12. Please, hold back the collective groans – the J12 is not just another ‘Designer watch’. Of course, there will always be a degree of snobbery towards a watch like this. Chanel is not your typical watchmaker with 200 years of history, founded by a refined Swiss gentleman who could view the Alps from their workshop window. Instead, Chanel is a modern brand in the world of watches, producing modern pieces for a modern audience. The History of Chanel J12 Beginning in the fashion world in the early 20th century, Chanel started producing watches in 1987, debuting with the Première. At the turn of the millennium, Chanel launched the J12. The J12 embraced the heritage and design cues of leading diver’s watches but challenged and developed upon them in its own unique way. Embracing a sleek, futuristic appearance, the J12 was composed of black ceramic. This material is not only hard-wearing but provides the watch with a certain elegance and stylishness. Ceramic can, sometimes, feel somewhat lightweight or plasticky on the wrist, almost as if you are wearing a toy watch – the J12 has no such issue. The ceramic used in the J12s, produced in-house, has a quality and substantial feeling to it that others can lack. Chanel shortly followed this release with a white version, too. Both versions of this watch continue to be eminently popular, and I can guarantee that in every sale that features a J12, there will be great interest in the watch. In particular, we will often do multiple one-to-one virtual viewings with bidders specifically interested in the J12. Ultimately, the fanaticism for the watch is there on auction day, too. It is easy to see why; there is an effortless class to the J12. The watch fits with the ‘Quiet Luxury’ that appealed to so many in recent years. It is recognisably a luxury watch, but not too showy in its appearance. J12 at Auction What specifically drew me to writing about the J12, is one particular example we had in our Luxury Watch Sale which took place on the 23rd of November. A part of Chanel’s limited edition Joaillerie line, this example manages to fit in with the fine jewellery aesthetic of the range, whilst still being wearable and not too flashy. This J12 has luxury built into every facet – an 18-carat white-gold bezel set with thirty-six rubies, twelve baguette cut diamonds, a ruby in the crown, diamond-dot hour markers, an 18-carat white-gold case back – even the clasp is gold! If this watch were made of another material, it could potentially be too much. The black ceramic of the case and bracelet contrasts the eye-catching stones and provides the watch with an aesthetic balance and nuance that serves it well. The luxury extends to the watch’s internals, with a highly finished movement powering the watch. This example is one of only twelve made, and, coincidentally, is number five. The limited nature of this watch, as well as its eye-catching appearance, definitely made it a popular piece on auction day. Lot 61 Chanel – a limited edition J12 Joaillerie bracelet watch, 33mm. Estimate: £6,500 – £8,500 Lot 59 Chanel – a J12 Chromatic bracelet watch, 40mm. Price Realised: £2,210.00 Lot 58 Chanel – a J12 bracelet watch, 34mm. Price Realised: £1,196.00 Valuations Our valuations are free, with no obligation to sell with us. Following her blog on vinyl regarding Fellows’ upcoming Designer Collection sale, Monisha Cooper has picked up some alluring Chanel highlights in the sale. Arguably the most famous Chanel bag is the Chanel 2.55 handbag. Our Designer Collection sale which closes on the 7th of September has a charming selection of these iconic bags up for auction. This singular rectangular shaped classic bag’s name refers to the month and year in which Coco Chanel created the design; February 1955, a date to remember. What makes a bag a ‘reissue’? A reissue is a 2005 version of the 2.55 that Karl Lagerfeld reintroduced as an exact recreation of the original. From Chanel’s 2016 collection comes two special edition Nude Medallion Reissue 225 & 226 handbags in navy and tan respectively, lots 49 & 50. They are both a fabulous interpretation of the classic reissue bag without Chanel’s signature quilted pattern. The bags also features the classic reissue chain straps with two enamel medallions. The size 225 is the medium size. It’s comparable to the Chanel medium/large classic flap bag and size 226 is the large size. CHANEL – a special edition navy blue 2.55 Nude Medallion Reissue 225 handbag. The medium size of this iconic reissue classic 225 Flap comes in navy and is a compelling iteration of Chanel handbag silhouettes. Designed with a navy blue smooth calfskin leather exterior and gold-tone hardware, featuring burgundy and blue grosgrain ribbon trim with chain detailing, a rear patch pocket, reissue chain shoulder strap with two medallion charms a mademoiselle turn-lock front fastening and interior secondary flap with snap button fastening and a burgundy suede lined interior. The larger tan calfskin 226 is a gorgeous shoulder bag. The frame of this luxury piece is composed of a smooth brown tan calfskin, the gold-tone hardware completes the warm-toned colourway. The Bijoux chain-link strap, a signature to Chanel 2.55 bags, can be worn singled as a crossbody or doubled for on-shoulder wear, and features two hanging charms. These bags are truly a picture of classic femininity and it’s no surprise that they are among the most coveted of all designer handbags. Both bags come with maker’s dust bag and authenticity card.

We understand it is a confusing and trying time for everyone but staying safe, being responsible and listening to the advise given by the government is the best we can do at present. Given these circumstances, we at Fellows are doing our best to respect and adhere to the guidelines provided. Whilst most of us are working from home, and carrying on as best as we can, I have been condition reporting our fabulous selection of designer bags which will be in our future Designer Collection auction, and here is my favourite of the week. The Chanel Paris-Moscow Red Square handbag from the 2009 fall collection. As I was researching about this beautifully crafted handbag, I found out that Chanel was inspired a great deal by Russian fashion, the highly acclaimed Métiers d’Art collection of pre-fall 2009, was dedicated to the link between Paris and Moscow. Karl Lagerfeld also made his directorial debut, with a silent film looking back at the love affair between Chanel and the Grand Duke Dimitri to introduce the collection. Chanel bags have become increasingly popular at auction Launched in 2002, Chanel’s Metiers d’Art is an annual collection dedicated to the embroiderers, milliners, goldsmiths and other highly skilled craftspeople who are the key players behind the scenes of the Parisian couture house. Using a key destination in the history of Chanel for inspiration, the 2009 city of choice was Moscow and the spirit of Russia was evident throughout. The Paris-Moscow handbag captured my attention the minute I saw it, it has incredible details that combine the best of Chanel and Russian artistry. As with any classic, this bag has everything you could want out of a Chanel – the dual chain-link, the quilted stitching, and the beautiful Russian skyline is artistically put together on the front of the bag. This bag is a perfect combination of glam meets style. As a stylish everyday bag, you can easily fit your wallet, phone and your makeup into it. It is light and classy enough to take to brunch or an early evening diner with friends. Though the bag is just close to 20 years old, one would never know just by looking at it, which is why buying a vintage, pre-loved version is a more affordable choice.
