Fellows’ record-breaking handbags auction on Thursday the 20th of February, saw house records broke by achieving their highest number of registered bidders yet during their Handbags, Jewellery & Accessories auction. Fellows had 1,130 people registered to bid across multiple bidding platforms. This is the highest number of registrations for a Handbags & Accessories auction hosted by Fellows, as well as the highest number of registrations that they have seen in the past three years. Just a few months ago, Fellows appointed Nicola Whittaker as Head of Handbags, and Patricia Preuschoff as Catalogue Manager. Under their direction, the department has continued to grow, and this record-breaking auction is demonstrative of their success. What The Experts Said Nicola Whittaker, Head of Handbags, said: “It’s wonderful that this auction attracted such a high number of bidders. The Handbags & Accessories department is still in its infancy compared to our other specialist departments so it’s wonderful to be part of its growing success. We have expanded the scheduled auctions to six this year and hope to see the increased interest continue. Consignments for April are open, and we know that sellers will be keen to add items to what is already shaping up to be an exciting Spring auction.”. Nicola Whittaker | Head of Handbags Patricia Preuschoff, Catalogue Manager, said: “I am thrilled by the amount of interest our recent Handbags auction drew! The collection of lots was one of the best ones we have seen so far, and I am delighted that so many of our clients seem to agree. Having over 1,000 bidders was truly exciting, I thoroughly enjoyed watching the bidding unfold. Our Handbags & Accessories department is only continuing to grow thanks to our clients who continue to trust us for authentic bags and excellent customer service.”. The Hermès Kelly bag, a staple for the iconic Hermès brand for almost a century, retains its long-standing reputation as a must-have bag for the fashion-conscious. History of the Hermès Kelly The Kelly design is an evolution of Hermès’ first bag, the Haut à Courroies. Originally designed to carry the saddles Hermès were known for, this bag has become the template for many of the house’s iconic designs but would now be recognised as the Birkin HAC. This original bag, the Kelly was named after the actress and princess Grace Kelly who had used a Sac à Dépêches to cover her pregnancy from the press. Many famous names were seen wearing the Sac à Depêches from the 1930s onwards. However, its popularity can be largely accredited to its appearance on the arm of a superstar from Hollywood’s golden era – actress Grace Kelly. Grace Kelly Kelly starred in the 1955 Alfred Hitchcock-directed film, ‘To Catch a Thief’. She wore the Hermès bag as part of her on-screen wardrobe; she then adopted it into her off-screen style. Most notably, Grace Kelly would carry the bag to shield herself during her first pregnancy. A photograph of her in this act became the cover image of Life magazine in 1956. This prompted the nicknaming of the Sac à Depêches the “Kelly” bag.  Due to the prevailing association of the designer piece with the actress who popularised it, Hermès renamed the Sac à Depêches to the Kelly in 1977. The Kelly bag remains iconic today. Grace Kelly’s original Kelly bag was the centrepiece of the 2010 exhibition ‘Grace Kelly: Style Icon’, at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. The Style of the Kelly Bag All Kellys are trapeze-shaped, structured bags with a top handle and detachable shoulder strap. They come in varying sizes from 15 to 50 (the size is the measurement of the length of the bag, at the base, in centimetres). The Kelly design has lent its iconic style to a whole collection of items. From leather goods such as wallets and belts to rings. Lot 636 Hermès – Kelly Lock ring. Price Realised: £123.50 The bag remains undeniably iconic, no matter which size you pick, it’s immediately recognisable as a Kelly. The choices for the Hermès admirer are the type of leather, style of stitching, size, colour and hardware. A newer addition to the Kelly family is the Kelly Pochette. Part of John Paul Gaultier’s first collection for Hermès in 2004, it is known as the original Mini Kelly. Envisioned as a compact iteration of the Kelly bag, this petite piece exudes timeless elegance with its compact yet functional design. Since its launch in the early 2000s, it has been a highly sought-after piece for collectors but was not classed as a quota bag until recently.  In line with the rest of the Kelly range, the Pochette includes the same features such as the straps and turn lock closure. Unlike the Mini Kelly, the Pochette cannot be converted into a shoulder bag, it is a clutch. However, it can (importantly) fit most standard-size mobile phones, something you might struggle with in a Mini Kelly 20. The top handle has some flexibility so you can hold it by the handle or put your hand through as a typical clutch.   This new imagining of a familiar style allows Hermès to increase its range while staying true to the stylistic legacy of the brand.   Magic in the Details: Stitching and Leather The style of stitching is denoted by Sellier or Retourne. Sellier translates to saddle and refers to the style being the most like the original. The Sellier has a rigid structure, with defined corners and visible stitching.  Retourne, in this instance, translates to turn out. The artisans start off in the same way as the Sellier but then turn the bag inside out. This gives a Retourne softer corners and piping rather than stitching. Some leathers suit certain styles better than others. Clemence is very soft and slightly heavier than the more commonly used Togo. This means that the leather can soften and stretch with age, giving it a slouchier and more casual appearance, which works well with the style of the Retourne. Whereas Chèvre is very lightweight and suits the more structured style of the Sellier. Kellys made from Chèvre are very popular and can be considered exotic skin. The rise in popularity is mostly due to the fashion for the mini Kellys being created in Chèvre. Due to its heavily textured grain, it is a leather that is more forgiving of scratches and marks. Due to the bag’s fine craft process and popularity, the Kelly bag is a highly exclusive purchase. It takes many years for loyal Hermès customers to have the opportunity to purchase one of these bags. One way for a savvy shopper to avoid this wait is to shop at auction. Hermès Kelly Bags at Auction Lot 168 Hermès – Swift Noir Kelly Pochette. Hermés Scarves The now iconic Hermés carrés (meaning ‘square scarves’), first went into production exactly a century after Thierry Hermés opened doors to what is now one of the most prominent luxury fashion houses on the planet. Robert Dumas, a family member, created the must-have accessory using a woodblock and silk stronger than anything else available on the market – making it the most versatile and sought-after accessory amongst the Parisian high society. Whether tied to a saddle, around the neck or as Princess Grace Kelly of Monaco did in 1957, used as an arm sling, the intricate and colourful designs quickly cemented its place as an elevated wardrobe staple. The creation process lives up to the thorough and meticulous reputation of the house, as each pattern takes over a year to finalise. Only releasing 12 designs per year, each motif can be traced back to the year of production and artist. This plays a key role in identifying whether your Hermés scarf is genuine, here are some factors you should be looking out for:
  • Artist signature on every piece (sometimes subtle and hard, or fun, to find!)
  • Hermés logo, and a copyright circled ‘c’.
  • Hand-rolled hems – always facing upwards.
  • Exact colour match with the thread.
  • Clear and vibrant colouring.
Hermés Scarves at Auction With each pattern telling a story, here are some from our February 20th Handbags and Accessory sale: Lot 179 Hermès – ‘Regina’ silk scarf. Estimate: £150 – £200 Meaning ‘Queen’ in Latin, this design was first introduced in 1972 and inspired by our Royal Queen Elizabeth II. Depicting an exquisite bouquet of wildflowers, it was later re-issued in 2002 to celebrate and honour the Queen’s Golden Jubilee. Lot 184 Hermès – ‘Cosmos’ silk scarf. Price Realised: £84.50 Phillipe Ledoux is widely referred to as a legend when it comes to Hermés. His impact on the brand was huge, having created some of the most collected carrés to this day, ‘Cosmos’ being one of them! He was enlisted by Dumas himself, and his illustrations can be enjoyed in 90 scarves created throughout his career. Valuations Our valuations are free, with no obligation to sell with us. A new sports car, two house deposits, or five designer handbags by Hermès? Fellows Auctioneers has just sold five magnificent pre-loved handbags for a whopping full price of £55,059.40 (including fees) in the company’s best sale of designer accessories in 2020. Despite a year of behind-closed-doors and online auctions, the independent, 144-year old family business, with offices in Birmingham and London, has just pulled a phenomenal sale out of the bag. One designer handbag received 75 bids as the appetite for pre-loved items at auction is stronger than ever. In a year of restrictions and lockdowns, the auction market is increasingly strong and Fellows Auctioneers’ recent sale is no exception. The Designer Collection, which ended on Monday 23rd November 2020 and was operated in a timed, online-only format, was filled with sought-after designer items which flew above their estimates. The best single price for an item was a 2006 Bordeaux Porosus Crocodile Birkin by Hermès which sold for £16,588 including fees. Just under 900 people were signed up to the auction, which is the record amount for the Designer Collection sale at Fellows. Designer Collection Specialist Sophie Higgs with the Birkin handbags which flew above their estimates Hermès Birkin handbags are some of the most illustrious and sought-after items in the world of fashion. Often described as elegance in motion, Hermès is known for its artisanal models. The company has remained faithful with their quality and craftsmanship that were used to craft their saddles over two centuries ago. Exceptional hand crafted bags that were created by Hermès post-1945 contain a date stamp so that their age can be determined. Such is the quality of Hermès Birkins, it takes designers 40 hours to craft a single handbag. The concept of the Birkin was established between actress Jane Birkin and Jean-Louis Dumas, then creative director of Hermès on a flight in 1983. Jane Birkin’s contents in her handbag spilled and she then began to devise the idea of a new, perfect weekend bag. Thus, these beautiful handbags were born and Fellows’ highlight example, the 2006 Bordeaux Porosus Birkin, features premium leather and is in immaculate condition. The bags fetched over £55,000 in total Sophie Higgs, Designer Collection Specialist at Fellows Auctioneers, said: “I have been working on Designer Collection auctions at Fellows for many years and these are some of the best prices we have ever achieved. Hermès was established in 1837 and the company was renowned for its handcrafted harness and bridles for carriages, catering mainly for European royalty at the time. The company started developing handbags in the 20th century and the idea for the Birkins, originating in the 1980s, was the basis for some of the most wonderful accessories in the world. To sell five stunning examples for fantastic prices shows the strength of the desire for these bags. The buyers have themselves a real treat in time for Christmas.” A list of the Hermès Birkin handbags and their sold price is listed below (price realised is including all fees):
  • Lot 136 – HERMÈS – a 2006 Bordeaux Porosus Crocodile Birkin 35 handbag. Price Realised: £16,588.00.
  • Lot 137 – HERMÈS – a 2003 black Porosus Birkin 35 handbag. Price Realised: £11,484.00.
  • Lot 138 – HERMÈS – a 2002 Matte Niloticus Crocodile Birkin 30 handbag. Price Realised: £14,036.00.
  • Lot 139 – HERMÈS – a 2003 blue Birkin 35 handbag. Price Realised: £6,188.60.
  • Lot 140 – HERMÈS – a 2007 olive green Birkin 35 handbag. Price Realised: £6,762.80.
Total price: £55,059.40

By Sophie Higgs, Designer Collection Specialist at Fellows Auctioneers The Designer Collection auction often includes a variety of Hermès handbags and accessories. Often described as elegance in motion, Hermès is known for its artisanal models. The company have remained faithful with their quality and craftsmanship that were used to craft their saddles over two centuries ago! These traditional techniques are still seen today in the Hermès Birkin and Kelly handbags that are still stitched by hand. Hermès was established in 1837 and was renowned for their handcrafted harness and bridles for carriages, catering mainly for European Royalty at that time. The business later expanded into saddles and the first handbag wasn’t made until 1922 and the first scarf until 1937. The Designer Collection on 23rd November 2020 features many Hermès highlights Something really interesting to know about the iconic items designed by Hermès, besides the fact they come with great history, you can easily find how old your purchase is by identifying the date stamp on all leather items made by Hermès after 1945. All of their leather items should have a blind stamp. Hermès uses letters in alphabetical order to date the bags surrounded by a shape. From 1945 to 1970, no shapes were used. From 1971 to 1996, a circle shape is used Hermès is known for hiring the best artisans who are specially trained in leathers. Whilst crafting each item, there are many processes that must be followed that make each item a ‘Hermès’. It is these authentication facts that make up the overall uniqueness of a Hermès item. The stamps are a final seal of approval by an official inspector in passing the quality of the items made for sale. The stamp will contain the date code which is a way of identifying the artisan and the workshop in which the item was made. If an item is not passed by the inspector it is actually discarded! For example, if you came across a stamp that had an hourglass, AR & a P inside a square, the hourglass is the mark of a master artisan, AR would identify which factory the item was made in and the square will have an alphabet within it which identifies the year it was made. Another reason to include the stamps is for the purpose of a repair if ever it is needed as the stamp would be able to identify which artisan crafted the bag and it would go directly to the person / factory. Below is a little brief on some of the other stamp that you may come across: • An ‘S’ Stamp: The S stands for sale and at Hermès it happens twice a year since 1938, bags stamped with S have a lower resale value, not that much lower though!• A Shooting Star Stamp: Handcrafted for an employee of Hermès or for the Artisan them self, these handbags can never be sent to the Hermès Spa. Some see the shooting star as being a collectible.• Horse Shoe Stamp: These handbags are special ordered and are only acquired by clients that have bought their way in. Special ordered bags can include a coloured interior or even your initials blind-stamped in the bag.• Exotic Skin Stamps: These stamps will be found on the front of the bag to the left of the Hermés made in Paris stamp and will be in either the same silver or gold as the brand stamp or plain. Alligator, crocodile, lizard, ostrich handbags and look like, •• (Crococdile Niloticus), ^ (Crocodile Porosus), – (Varanus Niloticus Lizard), = (Varanus Salvator Lizard), or a square (Alligator Mississippiensis). HERMÈS – a 2002 Matte Niloticus Crocodile Birkin 30 handbag These date stamps and symbols are important to all Hermès bags as they validate their authenticity. It is important to look for them, although the fake bags also try to replicate these stamps, it is so important when buying a second hand Hermès from a reliable and trusted seller like Fellows Auctioneers. There are some really amazing Hermès handbags and accessories in The Designer Collection November sale on the 23rd 2020 , from a selection of Porosus crocodile dog collars and leads with ‘special order’ horseshoe stamps, a matte Niloticus crocodile Birkin 30 handbag, as well as a number of incredibly sought after Kelly and Birkin handbags in a variety of Autumnal colours and exotic skins.

An incredible Hermès Endless Road Birkin HAC handbag is set to sell for upwards of £30,000 at Fellows Auctioneers, in Birmingham. The beautifully-crafted handbag is Lot 141 in Fellows’ Designer Collection auction, which is open for bidding and ends on Monday 8th June. It has an estimate of £22,000 – £28,000. The Endless Road handbag in all its beauty. Why is it so rare? Depicting a seemingly endless road, winding through a Californian landscape, the Endless Road motif was inspired by Pop Art paintings. The clever use of perspective invites the observer to set out on a “night of adventure”. Described by The Telegraph as “a rather joyous example of everything that sets Hermès apart”,this item was a calling card for the luxury French manufacturer. This dark Endless Road design was the flagship pattern for the men’s universe at Hermès, under Véronique Nichanian. The 2018 leather collections used the Endless Road design both on small and big pieces. However, the Birkin HAC was the only piece to display the whole landscape, every other piece showed it partly or from a different angle. The stylish bag is constructed predominantly in the popular blue Togo Hermès leather. Each bag was meticulously crafted by an individual artisan from 47 leather pieces in 11 colours which were all hand-cut. The process took at least 30 hours per bag. This bag’s hardware is polished palladium, including maker’s signature turn-lock fastening. The maker’s dust bag and box are sold with the lot to make this the perfect purchase for a fashion enthusiast. The brand does not disclose how many were made but it is understood to be very few. History of the Birkin design Named after Jane Birkin following a flight from Paris to London with Hermès CEO Jean-Louis Dumas in the eighties, the demand for these distinguished Birkin handbags has only increased as the years have gone by. The original Haut à courroies (HAC) bags were designed to transport equestrian equipment in 1900. Meaning tall (haut), with straps (courroies), the oversized bags are now more often purchased for weekend or travel bags and are worn by both men and women. Sophie Higgs, Designer Collection Specialist from Fellows Auctioneers, said: “The Endless Road Hermès Birkin HAC is one of most interesting handbags we have ever had up for auction. The Endless Road design is extremely rare. It was only retailed by Hermès for a limited time and is no longer part of the current collection. The only way to purchase one of these handbags is through the secondary market. Given its scarcity, it will be sought-after in our June Designer Collection auction.”

A black Hermès Birkin HAC handbag has sold for £24,244.00 (including fees) and has broken a house record for the sale of a Birkin bag at Fellows Auctioneers. The 2013 matte black Porosus Crocodile Birkin HAC 40 bag formed part of Fellows’ Designer Collection auction, which took place in Birmingham on Monday 24th February 2020. The bag featured as Lot 139 in the sale, and sold at approximately 12:20pm to a bidder on Fellows’ own live bidding platform for a hammer price of £19,000. This amount trumps the previous house record set by the family-run auctioneers, which was the sale of a Rouge Porosus Crocodile Birkin 35 handbag for £22,968.00 (including fees) in October 2016. HERMÈS – a 2013 matte black Porosus Crocodile Birkin HAC 40 handbag The special Matte Porosus Crocodile HAC 40 handbag features rare ruthenium hardware. Ruthenium is a polished silver hardware, which is darker than the standard Palladium and is much rarer to find. It is usually applied to custom bags or unique designs such as this elegant item. Known as the king of the exotics, Porosus Crocodile fetches the highest prices on the primary and secondary markets – hence the number of bids placed on this sought-after bag. Following a tense bidding war which resulted in the bidding for the item rising up in thousands, a buyer from the Fellows Live platform eventually acquired the bag for a whopping price. Sophie Higgs, Designer Collection Specialist at Fellows Auctioneers, said: “This rare Hermès Birkin is one of the best handbags we have ever had go under the hammer. For us to generate so much interest and for the bag to sell for a great amount is a pleasure to see. Since we started our Designer Collection auctions a number of years ago the interest we are getting in top-end bags gets stronger and stronger. Our first Designer Collection of 2020 was incredibly popular and I hope it’s a trend which continues.” The next Designer Collection auction at Fellows Auctioneers will take place on Monday 27th April. We are now accepting consignments for this sale. You can visit our website here for a free valuation on your designer accessories. Sophie Higgs, Designer Collection Specialist at Fellows Auctioneers, has been taking us through some of the highlights in Fellows’ upcoming auction. We are very excited to have two very collectable, limited edition items in our upcoming Designer Collection auction. Lot 241 is a Louis Vuitton Takashi Murakami Brown Mini Monogram Satin Cherry Blossom Griotte handbag and Lot 242, which is a pair of Louis Vuitton Takashi Murakami Brown Monogram Satin Cherry Blossom peep-toe heeled pumps. A rare evening bag and a matching pair of shoes, both featuring Louis Vuitton’s monogram cherry blossom exterior, with red leather and silver metallic snakeskin trim, with Swarovski crystal detailing. The Monogram Satin Cherry Blossom Collection was created as an evening line inspired by the limited edition 2003 Cherry Blossom Collection in collaboration with the Japanese pop artist, Takashi Murakami. Takashi Murakami is a famous Japanese contemporary artist who wanted to give some freshness and cheerfulness to the iconic Louis Vuitton monogram pattern which led to the creation of the Cherry Blossom Monogram Collection. Having these extremely sought-after Takashi Murakami pieces in our Designer Collection auction is extremely special, especially as both items are in very good condition complete with their dust bags and boxes. The Hermès Constance handbag is a timeless classic, regarded as one of the most sought-after Hermès handbags alongside the Birkin, Kelly and Evelyn. The Hermès Constance bag was designed in 1969 by Catherine Chaillet, and named after her daughter who was born in the same year. Taking up to 14 hours to create, the Hermès Constance bag is entirely hand stitched, crafted by a single, highly trained artisan in Paris, with every element thoroughly inspected before it is released. The Constance is sleek, simple and elegant in its design. Instantly recognisable with a distinctive large H shaped buckle to the centre front. Its adjustable strap allows it to be carried easily on the shoulder or in the hand and creates the perfect transitional day to night bag. Available in a variety of materials, hardware, colours, and sizes. The classic Constance 23cm has become very rare and very difficult to obtain. Fellows are very excited to boast two vintage 23cms crocodile skin Constance handbags going into the Designer Collection auction on the 24th February, and being crafted from exotic skins means they are even more exclusive and harder come by. Lot 147 is a 1970s Hermès burgundy crocodile Constance 23 handbag and Lot 148 is 1979 Hermès black crocodile Constance 23 handbag, both with gold-tone hardware and complete with their original dust bags. These exceptionally rare handbags bags are two auction highlights that are bound to draw attention, true collectors items, not to be missed. Featuring in this sale, we also have three HAC handbags – also known as the Haut à Courroies (High Belts in French). It was created in 1892 and so it’s much older than the Birkin bag which was created in 1982. The HAC and the Birkin look very similar, this is because the design of the Birkin was taken directly from the HAC. They have all of the same features but proportionally the HAC is taller with slightly shorter handles, this is because the original purpose of the Hermes HAC Bag was to transport riding equipment like saddle and boots. Today the larger sized HAC bag is seen more as travel bag rather than a handbag. HERMÈS – a 2013 matte black Porosus Crocodile Birkin HAC 40 handbag We have a very special Matte Porosus Crocodile Hac 40 handbag with ruthenium hardware in our upcoming Designer Collection auction. Ruthenium is a polished silver hardware, that is darker than the standard Palladium and much rarer to find. It is usually applied to custom bags or unique designs. This HAC is impossible to get at Hermès boutiques in this size and Porosus skin. Known as the king of the exotics, Porosus Crocodile fetches the highest prices on the primary and secondary markets. The HAC handbag is an important piece of Hermès’ history as the details are not only directly seen in the Birkin bag but also in the Kelly. The bag is not easy to find, its limited in supply and the demand is as high as the Birkin so, with three Birkins and three HACs listed among the many other sought-after Hermès handbags that are due to sell in our Designer Collection auction on the 24th February, this could be the most exciting sale to date. Make sure you keep your eyes peeled.
