One of the most expensive handbags we have ever sold (a Hermès Crocodile Birkin) has fetched a whopping full price of £23,606. It is the second most expensive handbag to ever sell in one of our auctions, and the highest price we have achieved for a handbag in 2021. Four bids of over £20,000 (including fees) were placed on the beautiful 2010 red Porosus Crocodile Birkin 35 by Hermès. We sold the fashion accessory as Lot 237 in the Designer Collection sale, a timed, online-only auction which took place on Monday 6th September. It had a pre-auction estimate of £18,000 – £22,000. The Red Birkin Handbag Crafted from luxurious polished red crocodile skin with silver-tone hardware accents, the bag features rigid looping handles, a top flap and a cross-over strap closure. The renowned maker’s signature turn-lock fastening is on show. In addition, the bag elegantly displays its detachable clochette with a matching crocodile skin covered padlock and two keys. A maker’s dust bag was included with the purchase. Abigail Moses, from the Designer Collection sale at Fellows Auctioneers, said: “Wearing this Birkin would make anyone feel like a style icon. I am proud it has fetched one of the highest prices for a handbag in our history. “It seems each sale is getting more popular as they go by and yesterday’s auction was no exception. The red Porosus Crocodile Birkin is a thing of beauty and the buyer has themselves a real treasure. The bag is in a brilliant condition and it complements all styles.” History of Birkin Bags Since its introduction 40-years ago, the Hermès Birkin remains one of the fashion world’s top treasures. The idea for the accessory was brought about on a flight in 1983 between Jane Birkin and Jean-Louis Dumas, then creative director of the company. The contents of Jane Birkin’s current bag spilled and the two began a discussion on how to create the perfect travel bag – hence the Birkin was born. These bags carry such elegance and class, it takes designers 48 hours to create one Birkin. Our Designer Collection sale saw hundreds of accessories from top fashion brands go under the hammer. Prices soared as customers flocked to get their hands on their favourite stylish items. Valuations Our valuations are free, with no obligation to sell with us. A magnificent pre-loved bright pink Hermès Birkin handbag has just sold for a whopping £19,778.00 (including fees) at a UK auction. The designer accessory is a 2015 design, and it is believed to take 48 hours for an artisian to craft one single Hermès Birkin handbag. The Porosus Crocodile bag sold in a timed auction of designer accessories at Fellows Auctioneers, who have offices in Birmingham and London. The pink Hermès Birkin handbag With an estimate of £14,000 – £20,000, the item received a total of six bids in the tens of thousands as it was the highlight lot in the sale. A new sports car, two house deposits, or five designer handbags by Hermès? Fellows Auctioneers has just sold five magnificent pre-loved handbags for a whopping full price of £55,059.40 (including fees) in the company’s best sale of designer accessories in 2020. Despite a year of behind-closed-doors and online auctions, the independent, 144-year old family business, with offices in Birmingham and London, has just pulled a phenomenal sale out of the bag. One designer handbag received 75 bids as the appetite for pre-loved items at auction is stronger than ever. In a year of restrictions and lockdowns, the auction market is increasingly strong and Fellows Auctioneers’ recent sale is no exception. The Designer Collection, which ended on Monday 23rd November 2020 and was operated in a timed, online-only format, was filled with sought-after designer items which flew above their estimates. The best single price for an item was a 2006 Bordeaux Porosus Crocodile Birkin by Hermès which sold for £16,588 including fees. Just under 900 people were signed up to the auction, which is the record amount for the Designer Collection sale at Fellows. Designer Collection Specialist Sophie Higgs with the Birkin handbags which flew above their estimates Hermès Birkin handbags are some of the most illustrious and sought-after items in the world of fashion. Often described as elegance in motion, Hermès is known for its artisanal models. The company has remained faithful with their quality and craftsmanship that were used to craft their saddles over two centuries ago. Exceptional hand crafted bags that were created by Hermès post-1945 contain a date stamp so that their age can be determined. Such is the quality of Hermès Birkins, it takes designers 40 hours to craft a single handbag. The concept of the Birkin was established between actress Jane Birkin and Jean-Louis Dumas, then creative director of Hermès on a flight in 1983. Jane Birkin’s contents in her handbag spilled and she then began to devise the idea of a new, perfect weekend bag. Thus, these beautiful handbags were born and Fellows’ highlight example, the 2006 Bordeaux Porosus Birkin, features premium leather and is in immaculate condition. The bags fetched over £55,000 in total Sophie Higgs, Designer Collection Specialist at Fellows Auctioneers, said: “I have been working on Designer Collection auctions at Fellows for many years and these are some of the best prices we have ever achieved. Hermès was established in 1837 and the company was renowned for its handcrafted harness and bridles for carriages, catering mainly for European royalty at the time. The company started developing handbags in the 20th century and the idea for the Birkins, originating in the 1980s, was the basis for some of the most wonderful accessories in the world. To sell five stunning examples for fantastic prices shows the strength of the desire for these bags. The buyers have themselves a real treat in time for Christmas.” A list of the Hermès Birkin handbags and their sold price is listed below (price realised is including all fees):

So you have just purchased the bag of your dreams, how do you keep it in tip-top condition? There are three main areas that you can look to address when it comes to caring for your designer handbag. Daily Use When you have purchased your beautiful accessory, you will want to show it off to the world. As we all know, we Brits love to complain about the weather – often with good reason! Our special climate leaves a lot to be desired and the havoc it can wreak on us and our accessories is a valid consideration when caring for your bag. The very clever people at Hermès have thought of these situations and the Birkin and Kelly bags usually come with a rain protection cover that fit the size of the bag. Many of the bags, although not all, come with these covers. From one extreme to another, handbags are also affected by sunlight. If and when we get any, it is advisable to keep your bag out of direct sunlight. If a bag is in direct sunlight for too long, the colours can fade and the leather might even crack. Day to day, our hands go through a lot. We are constantly bombarded with adverts for hand creams and while this is great for our skin, it can be bad news for your handbag. If your hands have cream on them or are dirty, avoid handling your bag – it can cause discolouration to the leather. No matter how high-quality the bag is, eventually, overuse will cause it to wear out. Rotate which handbag you carry regularly to make sure they last as long as possible. Alternatively, when you find a style that you like, buy a couple to switch in and out. Storage It is definitely advisable to take a little time to store your bags well when they are not being used. Where possible, the bags should be kept in their dust bags and boxes if they have them. If there is no dust bag, alternatives can be used. One of our favourite hacks is a pillowcase. Plastic covers are not advisable as the bags need to breathe. If your lovely bag doesn’t come with a box, never fear – there are plenty of other options. Pinterest is full of handbag storage solutions. The only thing to note is that, in order to keep your bag’s great condition, they shouldn’t be piled up or have anything stored on top of them. Ideally, the bags should be stuffed when stored to guarantee that they will keep their shape. There are plenty of ways to do this – you can use old newspaper or crepe paper for this. Here at Fellows, we often use Bagpad inserts. They are handbag shapers, like cushions, that keep your designer handbags in perfect shape when not in use. Custom-made for all luxury brands, they also offer a discount for Fellows customers. If we don’t have enough of the right size of Bagpad, we sometimes use bubble-wrap as it is malleable and very prevalent in an auction house! Upkeep Bags, especially leather handbags, require a little bit of TLC to keep them as wonderful as can be. Because leather is a natural product, it can dry out, especially when exposed to extreme weather. Even just in storage, leather’s natural oils will slowly evaporate. This how it becomes dry and stiffens, which is how cracks appear. Using a leather moisturiser will keep the leather supple and prevent it from cracking. Some designers include leather treatment with their products when you buy them. You don’t have to splash the cash to treat your leather well. Chelsea Leather Food, also known as Dubbin, is a firm favourite with anyone who needs to weatherproof hardy items such as saddles and boots. It is about £10 for a pot and lasts forever. While it may seem a strange recommendation, it has been known for years as the best leather balm. Wheelers’ Leather Spray and Leather Balm are both available from John Lewis for only £5 each and are great for maintaining your leather goods. As an added bonus, they also smell great. Suede is often seen as a risky option for an everyday handbag, but it doesn’t have to be. A simple suede protector spray from any high-street shoe shop will protect the surface. Apply it before you use the bag for the first time and you will be covered in case of rain. To keep your suede looking great, invest in a suede brush to clean and revive suede. Your bag will stay looking great for longer. With any type of bag, it is advisable to use a soft cloth to wipe your bag down on a weekly basis, when it is in use. If you use a patent handbag, a damp microfiber cloth is a great way to remove any residue. If your handbag’s condition is beyond your own capabilities, we would recommend speaking to The Handbag Clinic. They are professional handbag restorers and offer a discount for Fellows’ customers. This is by no means a complete list, we live and learn. We would love to hear about your hacks for looking after your bags. Why not tweet us or tag us on Instagram? We understand it is a confusing and trying time for everyone but staying safe, being responsible and listening to the advise given by the government is the best we can do at present. Given these circumstances, we at Fellows are doing our best to respect and adhere to the guidelines provided. Whilst most of us are working from home, and carrying on as best as we can, I have been condition reporting our fabulous selection of designer bags which will be in our future Designer Collection auction, and here is my favourite of the week. The Chanel Paris-Moscow Red Square handbag from the 2009 fall collection. As I was researching about this beautifully crafted handbag, I found out that Chanel was inspired a great deal by Russian fashion, the highly acclaimed Métiers d’Art collection of pre-fall 2009, was dedicated to the link between Paris and Moscow. Karl Lagerfeld also made his directorial debut, with a silent film looking back at the love affair between Chanel and the Grand Duke Dimitri to introduce the collection. Chanel bags have become increasingly popular at auction Launched in 2002, Chanel’s Metiers d’Art is an annual collection dedicated to the embroiderers, milliners, goldsmiths and other highly skilled craftspeople who are the key players behind the scenes of the Parisian couture house. Using a key destination in the history of Chanel for inspiration, the 2009 city of choice was Moscow and the spirit of Russia was evident throughout. The Paris-Moscow handbag captured my attention the minute I saw it, it has incredible details that combine the best of Chanel and Russian artistry. As with any classic, this bag has everything you could want out of a Chanel – the dual chain-link, the quilted stitching, and the beautiful Russian skyline is artistically put together on the front of the bag. This bag is a perfect combination of glam meets style. As a stylish everyday bag, you can easily fit your wallet, phone and your makeup into it. It is light and classy enough to take to brunch or an early evening diner with friends. Though the bag is just close to 20 years old, one would never know just by looking at it, which is why buying a vintage, pre-loved version is a more affordable choice. This blog was written by Monisha Cooper, from the Designer Collection Department at Fellows Auctioneers.

A black Hermès Birkin HAC handbag has sold for £24,244.00 (including fees) and has broken a house record for the sale of a Birkin bag at Fellows Auctioneers. The 2013 matte black Porosus Crocodile Birkin HAC 40 bag formed part of Fellows’ Designer Collection auction, which took place in Birmingham on Monday 24th February 2020. The bag featured as Lot 139 in the sale, and sold at approximately 12:20pm to a bidder on Fellows’ own live bidding platform for a hammer price of £19,000. This amount trumps the previous house record set by the family-run auctioneers, which was the sale of a Rouge Porosus Crocodile Birkin 35 handbag for £22,968.00 (including fees) in October 2016. HERMÈS – a 2013 matte black Porosus Crocodile Birkin HAC 40 handbag The special Matte Porosus Crocodile HAC 40 handbag features rare ruthenium hardware. Ruthenium is a polished silver hardware, which is darker than the standard Palladium and is much rarer to find. It is usually applied to custom bags or unique designs such as this elegant item. Known as the king of the exotics, Porosus Crocodile fetches the highest prices on the primary and secondary markets – hence the number of bids placed on this sought-after bag. Following a tense bidding war which resulted in the bidding for the item rising up in thousands, a buyer from the Fellows Live platform eventually acquired the bag for a whopping price. Sophie Higgs, Designer Collection Specialist at Fellows Auctioneers, said: “This rare Hermès Birkin is one of the best handbags we have ever had go under the hammer. For us to generate so much interest and for the bag to sell for a great amount is a pleasure to see. Since we started our Designer Collection auctions a number of years ago the interest we are getting in top-end bags gets stronger and stronger. Our first Designer Collection of 2020 was incredibly popular and I hope it’s a trend which continues.” The next Designer Collection auction at Fellows Auctioneers will take place on Monday 27th April. We are now accepting consignments for this sale. You can visit our website here for a free valuation on your designer accessories. Sophie Higgs, Designer Collection Specialist at Fellows Auctioneers, has been taking us through some of the highlights in Fellows’ upcoming auction. We are very excited to have two very collectable, limited edition items in our upcoming Designer Collection auction. Lot 241 is a Louis Vuitton Takashi Murakami Brown Mini Monogram Satin Cherry Blossom Griotte handbag and Lot 242, which is a pair of Louis Vuitton Takashi Murakami Brown Monogram Satin Cherry Blossom peep-toe heeled pumps. A rare evening bag and a matching pair of shoes, both featuring Louis Vuitton’s monogram cherry blossom exterior, with red leather and silver metallic snakeskin trim, with Swarovski crystal detailing. The Monogram Satin Cherry Blossom Collection was created as an evening line inspired by the limited edition 2003 Cherry Blossom Collection in collaboration with the Japanese pop artist, Takashi Murakami. Takashi Murakami is a famous Japanese contemporary artist who wanted to give some freshness and cheerfulness to the iconic Louis Vuitton monogram pattern which led to the creation of the Cherry Blossom Monogram Collection. Having these extremely sought-after Takashi Murakami pieces in our Designer Collection auction is extremely special, especially as both items are in very good condition complete with their dust bags and boxes. The Hermès Constance handbag is a timeless classic, regarded as one of the most sought-after Hermès handbags alongside the Birkin, Kelly and Evelyn. The Hermès Constance bag was designed in 1969 by Catherine Chaillet, and named after her daughter who was born in the same year. Taking up to 14 hours to create, the Hermès Constance bag is entirely hand stitched, crafted by a single, highly trained artisan in Paris, with every element thoroughly inspected before it is released. The Constance is sleek, simple and elegant in its design. Instantly recognisable with a distinctive large H shaped buckle to the centre front. Its adjustable strap allows it to be carried easily on the shoulder or in the hand and creates the perfect transitional day to night bag. Available in a variety of materials, hardware, colours, and sizes. The classic Constance 23cm has become very rare and very difficult to obtain. Fellows are very excited to boast two vintage 23cms crocodile skin Constance handbags going into the Designer Collection auction on the 24th February, and being crafted from exotic skins means they are even more exclusive and harder come by. Lot 147 is a 1970s Hermès burgundy crocodile Constance 23 handbag and Lot 148 is 1979 Hermès black crocodile Constance 23 handbag, both with gold-tone hardware and complete with their original dust bags. These exceptionally rare handbags bags are two auction highlights that are bound to draw attention, true collectors items, not to be missed. Featuring in this sale, we also have three HAC handbags – also known as the Haut à Courroies (High Belts in French). It was created in 1892 and so it’s much older than the Birkin bag which was created in 1982. The HAC and the Birkin look very similar, this is because the design of the Birkin was taken directly from the HAC. They have all of the same features but proportionally the HAC is taller with slightly shorter handles, this is because the original purpose of the Hermes HAC Bag was to transport riding equipment like saddle and boots. Today the larger sized HAC bag is seen more as travel bag rather than a handbag. HERMÈS – a 2013 matte black Porosus Crocodile Birkin HAC 40 handbag We have a very special Matte Porosus Crocodile Hac 40 handbag with ruthenium hardware in our upcoming Designer Collection auction. Ruthenium is a polished silver hardware, that is darker than the standard Palladium and much rarer to find. It is usually applied to custom bags or unique designs. This HAC is impossible to get at Hermès boutiques in this size and Porosus skin. Known as the king of the exotics, Porosus Crocodile fetches the highest prices on the primary and secondary markets. The HAC handbag is an important piece of Hermès’ history as the details are not only directly seen in the Birkin bag but also in the Kelly. The bag is not easy to find, its limited in supply and the demand is as high as the Birkin so, with three Birkins and three HACs listed among the many other sought-after Hermès handbags that are due to sell in our Designer Collection auction on the 24th February, this could be the most exciting sale to date. Make sure you keep your eyes peeled.

The collaboration allowed Fellows to offer a more comprehensive service to buyers and vendors alike. Charlotte Staerck, Retail Director at The Handbag Clinic, said: “I have been in love with handbags since I was very young, I saved for my first designer bag when I got my first part-time job at 16. My favourite brands are Chanel and Saint Laurent with my favourite bag being a Chanel Boy at the moment. I loved Lot 94 in Fellows’ Designer Collection, the peach croc lady Dior, it is stunning. Most people think they need to accept a pre-owned item in the condition it is in but there are so many things we can do to improve its condition. All Fellows’ customers were able to bring their new purchase back to its former glory. For us we are getting the message out that these services exist and we have services to suit all price points and needs.”

We’ve been speaking to Sophie Higgs, Designer Collection Specialist at Fellows Auctioneers, on why Louis Vuitton handbags are so popular at auction. Lot 215 in Fellows’ upcoming Designer Collection, is a French Company (Louis Vuitton) vintage bucket handbag. Designed with the traditional features of the French Company period and has an estimate of £200-£300. The French Company made bags under a special license for Louis Vuitton in the US from the mid 1970’s through the early 90’s to keep up with the production demands in North America. The French Company items were made differently to the Louis Vuitton bags that we see today, this makes them incredibly sought after. One of the different features was that French Company bags don’t have a date code like we seen in Louis Vuitton items today, instead they have a tyvek (paper-like) tag sewn into the seam of the bag. Since tyvek tags could very easily be removed, finding on intact is incredibly rare. The hardware is also very different from current models.  It has plated nickel instead of brass and it was not embossed with the Louis Vuitton name or Logo. Louis Vuitton – French Company vintage bucket handbag The French Company did not use the natural vachetta cowhide leather that we see today, instead they used various treatments and coatings which made the leather caramel in colour and so wont patina or water mark. The coating helped to protect the leather and ultimately made it more hardwearing. The bags are also one of the rare exceptions to the ‘no monograms cut off’ rule in Louis Vuitton products, usually highlighted as a ‘red flag’ when trying to detect counterfeit bags, another reason why The French Company bags are so unique. These bags are incredibly collectable and very hard to come by so don’t miss your chance to own this gorgeous vintage gem. Sophie Higgs, Designer Collection Specialist at Fellows Auctioneers

With maker’s dust bag. £800-£1200 A limited edition Yayoi Kusama Red Town Speedy 30 handbag Annaliese Foster, Costume Jewellery Specialist at Fellows Auctioneers, has explained the significance of Yayoi Kusama and why these kinds of handbags are so sought-after. Yayoi Kusama was born in 1929, in Japan. She is a Japanese contemporary artist primarily creating sculpture and installations, however she also works on paintings, performance art, fashion and more. Her work is based on the feelings and sensations when contemplating the themes of space, time and infinity by using repetitive patterns such as her ‘Infinity Nets’ and dense polka dots to an obsessive level which she calls “self-obliteration”, creating dizzying affects to the viewers. Yayoi Kusama’s art was ignited by living her childhood through World War II, making the plunge to move to New York to pursue modern art, she quickly became a leading force in her field, showing the way through Minimalism and Pop Art, even inspiring Andy Warhol. Yayoi Kusama explains that these patterns are drawn from her hallucinations, which she has described as “flashes of light, auras, or dense fields of dots”. Her art is her therapy, her life, there is no separation between the two. She worked on her collaboration for Louis Vuitton to create a line of handbags with Marc Jacobs in 2011, who she feels “his sincere attitude toward art” is the same as her own. The collection included an extensive range of handbags, shoes, dresses, scarves and accessories. Yayoi Kusama is known in the art world for her obsession with dots. Artistic Director Marc Jacobs approached Kusama to design a limited edition collection for Louis Vuitton that interprets the emblematic and unforgettable works for Kusama. From the second installation of the Yayoi Kusama line, the Speedy Town is covered in particularly striking dots. This line is very hard to find and sold out in most stores; the Yayoi Kusama collection has been selling for well above retail after market. Retail price was $1220.
