An alluring Austro-Hungarian necklace has sold for £900, on behalf of the Alzheimer’s Society, at Fellows Auctioneers. The late 19th century neo-Renaissance enamel and gem-set necklace soared above its £600 – £800 estimate and received over 30 bids in Fellows’ Jewellery Sale. The necklace was unearthed in a bag of what was presumed to be costume jewellery. The eagle-eyed jewellery specialist noticed that it was something very special. It featured as Lot 29 in the sale, which ended on Thursday 20th August. The gems in this sought-after piece included garnets, emeralds, and cultured pearls. The necklace’s seed pearl swag detail added a beautiful touch to its elegance. The item was sold in an overall good condition, containing various enamel panels that have been touched up with soldered stones. The Austro-Hungarian necklace Fellows frequently places items under the hammer to raise money for charitable causes, and welcomes entries into future auctions. The Costume Jewellery timed auctions often generate much-needed funds for charities such as Heart Research UK and St Michael’s Hospice. Items featured on the Fellows website which are being sold on behalf of charity can be seen marked by a charity logo -an image of two hands open. Lindsay Beardmore, Jewellery Specialist & Catalogue Manager at Fellows Auctioneers, said: “It was a pleasure to receive so much interest in this necklace early in our Jewellery Sale which raised £900 for the Alzheimer’s Society. This was a beautiful multi-coloured necklace which we knew would generate interest, but to achieve 32 bids was great. I am sure we can and will sell many more items like this for great charitable causes in the future.” Alzheimer’s Society is the UK’s leading dementia charity. The “Little Drop of Strength” necklace in Fellows’ 14th May Jewellery Sale sold for £520, far surpassing its £80 – £120 auction estimate. Fellows Auctioneers are donating the buyer’s premium from the lot, making the total donation £663.52. All money will go to DKMS. The necklace registered a huge amount of interest, receiving 51 bids from a total of nine bidders. The countdown timer for the item kept increasing as bids were placed on the necklace right up to the final second. It featured as Lot 20 in the sale, and sold at approximately 10:30am in Fellows’ highly sought-after Jewellery Sale.    Fellows sold the necklace on behalf of designer, social media influencer and DKMS ambassador Sally Hurman. Sally was inspired to create the solid silver, teardrop-shaped pendant due to her own very personal connection to the cause following her husband’s diagnosis of blood cancer five years ago. Sally, known to her social media audience by her handle Getting Stuff Done in Heels, regularly uses her platform to encourage followers to register online with DKMS. Stephen Whittaker, Managing Director of Fellows Auctioneers, said: “To see so many bids from a variety of people on the Little Drop of Strength necklace was a delight. All of the proceeds from the sale of this item will be going to DKMS, a great charity with a worthy cause.” Caroline Richardson, Head of Fundraising at DKMS, said: “We’re thrilled that Fellows supported DKMS through the auction of Sally Hurman’s stunning Little Drop of Strength necklace to help in the fight against blood cancer. The £663.52 raised will be put to good use immediately by providing around 16 home swab kits to potential lifesavers.” Every 20 minutes someone in the UK is diagnosed with a blood cancer, such as leukaemia, myeloma or lymphoma and often a blood stem cell donation is the best treatment method to help give someone a second chance of life.  It costs £40 to register one potential blood stem cell donor. DKMS relies on monetary donations to help cover this cost. The donation from the sale of this necklace will allow the charity to process 16 donor kits. If you are aged between 17-55 and in general good health, please register for your home swab kit online at dkms.org.uk.

Fellows’ Fine Jewellery sale on Thursday 16th May is set to feature one of the most alluring selections of Cartier to date. The sale includes 13 magnificent items from Cartier with a total high estimate of nearly £150,000 (£141,400). The esteemed French jewellery and watch company was founded in 1847 by Louis-François Cartier, who operated in a Parisian jewellery workshop until it expanded to include watches in 1874. In 1899 Cartier moved to their current Paris address before expanding to New York and London just a few years later. Known as one of the most popular jewellery designers in the world, Cartier’s pieces have been incredibly sought-after at auction. The collection includes an 18ct gold diamond ‘Naide’ bracelet, an impressive pair of 18ct gold brilliant-cut diamond stud earrings, and a beautiful 18ct gold diamond and pink enamel ‘Pasha’ automatic bracelet watch. Over the years Fellows have sold an abundance of elegant Cartier jewellery for a range of prices, including a platinum diamond ‘Lia’ ring for £151,200 in September 2017. Fellows also sold an 18ct gold diamond ‘C Heart of Cartier’ necklace for £10,336 in March this year. Alluring Cartier jewellery in the upcoming Fine Jewellery sale. Ben Randall, Fine Jewellery Catalogue Manager comments: “Jacques Cartier travelled extensively in search of inspirational gemstones and opportunities to create jewels. Cartier made themselves the default jewellers to the rich and famous clientele around the globe. That spirit carries on today. The diversity and range of their production means there is something to suit every taste. Cartier have high standards of design and craftsmanship and have followed fashion without being slavish to it. They have produced jewels which are archetypal of the age but remain timeless. Their creative use of carved gemstones in the Art Deco period is a joy to see. “We are thrilled to showcase an amazing range of Cartier in the May Fine Jewellery sale. My favourite piece has to be Lot 200. The bold Art Deco lines, refined to an elegant circle, are still so immensely wearable today. The beautiful item even retains its original case.”   Cartier highlights from the Fine Jewellery auction include:
  • Lot 108: CARTIER – a ‘Draperie’ necklace. Estimate £6,500 – £8,500.

Since 1911 we celebrate International Women’s Day on 8th March, which is set out to be the focal point in the movement for women’s rights. In our upcoming Fine Jewellery sale of 21st March we are delighted to offer an exquisite piece by a female artist linked to the Arts and Crafts Movement. Emerging in the late 19th century Victorian England, the Arts and Crafts movement was born in reaction to the machine-dominated mass-production creating objects of inferior quality. It took its name from the Arts and Crafts Exhibition Society, a group founded in 1887. It aimed to promote hand-craftsmanship and was one of the first art movements that blurred the line between fine arts and crafts. With its orientation towards ‘homemade’ goods and the domestic environment, it allowed greater involvement for female artisans. Between 1895 and 1905 there were over a hundred different organisations in Britain revolving around the Arts and Crafts principles creating an environment, in which, women could begin to take an active role in developing new forms of design, both as makers and consumers. Arthur and Georgie Gaskin designed attractive jewels using compositions of stylised leaves and flowers in silver, enamel, turquoise and opals. They had both studied at the Birmingham School of Art and went on to establish a very successful workshop admired for making elegant, hand-made pieces. Dorrie Nossiter was educated at the Municipal School of Art in Birmingham between 1910 and 1914, and is well-known for her naturalistic, typically asymmetrical designs in the Arts and Crafts tradition. SIBYL DUNLOP – a silver moonstone and marcasite foliate necklace. Lot 257 in our Fine Jewellery auction of 28th March is a moonstone and marcasite necklace by the celebrated goldsmith, Sibyl Dunlop. Born in 1889, she was schooled in Brussels and upon returning to England she established a workshop in Kensington Church Street, London, later joined by William Nathanson as her principal craftsman in the early 1920s. Her style is characterised by the use of semi-precious and precious gemstones set in silver in symmetrical patterns, often inspired by nature. This particular piece is a perfect example of her work. It features a rhythmic series of oval moonstone cabochons and marcasite foliate spacers, with partially concealed marcasite foliate clasp. The necklace bears a maker’s mark and a hallmark for London, for 1952 and it came to auction after spending almost 40 years in a private collection. It is estimated at £800-1,200. This blog was written by David Pregun, member of the Jewellery Department at Fellows Auctioneers.
