https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QZxgtNUfQTo A rare, colonial Australian brooch has sold for under £10,000 at Fellows Auctioneers in Birmingham. Pieces with aboriginal details are infrequently offered for sale at auction. The item depicts an emu and kangaroo amongst native flora – a common theme in Australian Jewellery. Perhaps slightly more unusual is the incorporation of an aboriginal person. The piece garnered a lot of interest before the sale and, against an estimate of £500 – £700, the brooch sold for over ten times its estimate for a hammer price of £7,300 (£9,314.80 including fees). After frantic bidding over two telephone lines, bidders in the room and online, the bids kept rising until an Australian buyer bought the fascinating piece of jewellery over the internet. This brooch was the highlight of Fellows’ monthly Antique & Modern Jewellery auction on Thursday 24th January 2019. Alex Duffy, Jewellery Specialist at Fellows Auctioneers, said “The brooch is a beautifully crafted example of Australian colonial jewellery, a rare commodity for which modern-day Australians show a wonderful appreciation. Among the more common motifs of the emu and kangaroo, this particular piece features an Aboriginal person seated among the flora and fauna. This is something I have never previously come across in jewellery of this period.” A Similar Example in 2024 In our upcoming Jewellery auction on January 13th, we have a similar example: Lot 14 Australian brooch & pendant Estimate: £70 – £100 Lot 14 in Fellows’ current Jewellery Timed Auction is an ‘Advance Australia’ pendant. Along with an early 20th century 9ct gold Australian Continent brooch. The pendant with marks to indicate 9ct gold, its length is 3.1 cm and its weight is 1.6gms. The pendant is in an overall good condition with surface scratches/wear in keeping with general age and wear. Its estimate is £70-100. Sapphire is one of the most precious and eye-catching gemstones. As it is the birthstone for September, we will take a look at three beautiful items of jewellery up for auction this month which feature it. Highlight Sapphire Items in the 7/8 September 2021 Jewellery Sale: Lot 176 A 14ct gold sapphire and diamond brooch. Estimate:  £300  –  £400 Lot 221 A sapphire and brilliant-cut diamond cluster ring. Estimate:  £400  –  £600 Lot 251 A sapphire and diamond cluster ring. Estimate:  £180  –  £220 History of Sapphire Sapphires have been desirable throughout history. Furthermore, the Ancient Egyptians used sapphires for eye-washes and Ancient Persians believed they gave the sky colour. In the present day, these stones are some of the most illustrious in all of jewellery. Some of the most elegant stones originated from Sri Lanka, where a selection of the world’s largest sapphires have been found. As well as coming in a variety of colours, different shades of the stone make for equal importance. Moreover, Ceylon, Thailand Royal, and Burmese are some of the intriguing blue sapphires. Colour has utmost importance in determining the value of a sapphire. The origin of a sapphire can be determined by its hues and chemicals. Perhaps the most sought-after sapphire is the Kashmir. Kashmir sapphires were mined in the northernmost Himalayan mountain for only a number of decades in the 19th and 20th centuries. The stones are incredibly precious, as a result we have sold numerous Kashmir sapphires at auctions for tens of thousands of pounds. The upcoming Jewellery sale features fabulous examples containing the September birthstone. In addition, we are offering free shipping on the two-day timed, online-only sale. A physical viewing day will take place on 6th September. Birmingham’s historic Jewellery Quarter will be playing host to the viewing. A Victorian brooch from the family of J.G. Farrell is going under the hammer at Fellows. The item has been in the Farrell family for nearly 100 years, and it first belonged to the Booker Prize winning author’s parents. We are delighted to offer the jewellery in the July Fine Jewellery sale. The Farrell Family William Farrell gifted his wife, Josephine, with the diamond brooch after their marriage in Yangon (formerly Rangoon), in 1930. The couple returned to the UK a few years after the jewellery was presented to Josephine in Myanmar (formerly Burma). Josephine Farrell gave birth to J.G. Farrell in 1935. After the family moved to Dublin in the 1940s, J.G. went on to publish many acclaimed books, including Troubles and The Singapore Grip. He won the 1973 Booker Prize for The Siege of Krishnapur, a book highlighting the siege of a fictional town during the Indian Rebellion in the 1850s. The novelist sadly drowned whilst angling in Ireland in 1979. This remarkable item belonging to Josephine was passed down to her daughter-in-law, Rosalind, who has now brought it to Fellows. Alex Duffy, Jewellery Specialist at Fellows Auctioneers, said: “One of the pleasures of being in this business is to learn about how a piece of jewellery has impacted upon a family history and the surrounding stories that create provenance. “Farrell’s Booker-Prize-winning novel is based in a fictional town in India and learning that his parents spent time across Asia and particularly in India, undoubtedly influenced the inception of the book. To be able to hold this brooch that connects all those stories is a wonderful thing.” The Brooch The late Victorian silver and gold, cat’s-eye chrysoberyl and old-cut diamond piece of jewellery has been unworn since 1999. Featuring as Lot 368 in our July Fine Jewellery sale, the brooch has an estimate of £700 – £900. The elegant brooch has an estimated total diamond weight of 1.30cts, and it is in an overall good condition. We are offering free shipping on the purchase of the jewellery, which can be viewed on selected dates. Moreover, the catalogue listing contains a detailed condition report. Customers can book to attend the auction in person and bid using multiple channels. Spread amongst 538 lots, there is over £1.2 million worth of jewellery in the sale. The Fine Jewellery sale will take place on Thursday 29th July. Valuations Our valuations are free, with no obligation to sell with us. A beautiful early 20th century Art Nouveau dragonfly brooch which sports the green and purple suffragette colours has sold for £15,950 including fees at Fellows Auctioneers. Lot 381 in the Fine Jewellery sale, a behind-closed-doors auction which took place in the Jewellery Quarter, Birmingham, was the pick of the bunch as it flew above its auction estimate. The elegant piece of jewellery had an estimate of £8,000 – £12,000, and received an abundance of bids in the sale. The green and purple colours traditionally symbolise the Suffragette Movement. Art Nouveau designs flourished in the early 20th century, coinciding with the right-to-vote for women campaigns at the time. The colour of green stood for hope and purple stood for loyalty and dignity. Hillary Clinton and Vice President Kamala Harris could be seen wearing purple at the presidential inauguration in the United States earlier this week. The elegant dragonfly brooch The platinum and gold, green plique-à-jour enamel, amethyst and diamond dragonfly brooch was created in the early 1900s, and it can also be worn as a pendant. The item features ruby cabochon eyes, and has an estimated total old-cut diamond weight of 0.40cts. With a length of 9.5cms and weighing 22.2gms, the brooch included a fitted S.J. Phillips case with the purchase. The Fine Jewellery sale contained over 500 lots, including some of the best jewellery that Fellows has to offer. The auction ran from 11am – 5:30pm on Thursday 21st January, and customers were able to bid via the telephones or over the internet. Fellows held the sale behind-closed-doors, and over 900 people were registered online across multiple platforms to bid on the sale. Alex Duffy, Jewellery Specialist from Fellows Auctioneers, said: “Thursday’s Fine auction was a great success and fantastic way for Fellows to kick off the New Year. The dragonfly is seen in some cultures as a symbol of transformation, joy and new beginnings, so it seems fitting that this fabulous creature would steal the show in our first Fine Jewellery sale of the year. Hopefully a good sign of things to come.”

A fascinating mid-19th century colonial Australian 18ct gold and seed pearl brooch is up for auction at Fellows in Birmingham. The alluring piece, depicting a kangaroo and emu amongst foliage, is a perfect representation of historic Australian jewellery and has an estimate of £1,500 – £2,000 in Fellows’ Fine Jewellery sale, taking place in Birmingham on Thursday 30th January 2020. With Australia Day looming, Lot 454 is a historic piece of animal-incorporated jewellery which is set to be sought-after in Fellows’ upcoming sale. Australian jewellery of the 19th and 20th century has become increasingly popular at auction in recent years. Naturalistic jewellery was created in a variety of styles by skilled goldsmiths who incorporated beautiful depictions which are symbolic of Australia. Flowers and animals were popular designs, and the origin of the pieces is perfectly represented by their instantly recognisable stunning gold surround. This particular 18ct gold example has a length of 2.9cms and weighs 4.2gms. A mid 19th century colonial Australian 18ct gold and seed pearl brooch, depicting a kangaroo and emu amongst foliage. In January 2019, Fellows sold a similar brooch for just under £10,000 (£9,314.80 including fees). Following a frantic bidding war, last year’s brooch sold for over ten times its estimate, which is an example of how popular historic Australian brooches currently are at auction. The brooch going under the hammer on 30th January is one of many highlights in what is set to be a popular first flagship auction of the year for Fellows. Alex Duffy, Jewellery Specialist at Fellows Auctioneers, said: “It is a pleasure to be able to offer another of these rare and unusual pieces for auction and with Australia day coming up, this makes for the perfect purchase to celebrate the nation’s culture. Nature has always provided unrivalled inspiration for art and jewellery, being forever subjected and abstracted in its various forms. The native flora and fauna expertly crafted within this brooch illustrates the admiration we have for our beautiful planet. It is important that we seek to promote and protect these natural treasures that have provided us with so much.” The Fine Jewellery sale is now available to view online and in person at the following times: 25 January 11am-4pm (Birmingham) 28 January 10am-4pm (Birmingham) 29 January 10am-4pm (Birmingham) 30 January 8.30am-11am (Birmingham) Photo ID is required

An 18ct gold diamond England crest brooch which belonged to a former West Bromwich Albion and Football Association chairman has sold for £1,202.40 (including fees) at Fellows Auctioneers, in Birmingham. The brooch was formerly owned by Sir Frederick Albert ‘Bert’ Millichip and Lady Barbara Millichip, and was subject to a fierce bidding war during Fellows’ Fine Jewellery sale. The stunning brooch, with 1996 hallmarks – the year Sir Bert retired from the Football Association – sold as Lot 275 at approximately 2:15pm on Thursday 30th January 2020. Against an estimate of £600 – £800, the brooch sold for a hammer price of £900 (£1,202.40 including fees). With a length of 3.7cms and a weight of 14.8gms, the brooch has the famous three lion markings which are symbolic of the England national football team. Multiple bids were placed on the brooch, with an internet bidder eventually winning the item formerly owned by Sir Bert, much to the delight of Fellows. An 18ct gold diamond Football Association shield brooch. Once in the collection of Lady Barbara Millichip and Sir Frederick Albert Millichip. Sir Bert had a long career spanning many decades working in football. He became chairman of West Bromwich Albion in 1974, before eventually going on to work for the FA. Initially, he was councillor before becoming chairman of the FA, a post he held from 1981–1996. Sir Bert was chairman of the FA throughout some of the most drastic changes in English football history, such as the introduction of the Premier League. He was also heavily involved in the appointment of England managers, including Terry Venables. Sir Bert received a knighthood for his services to the game in 1991. He passed away in 2002. Alex Duffy, Jewellery Specialist from Fellows Auctioneers, said: “After an online stand-off between bidders, it was fantastic to see the brooch sell so well. It’s always a pleasure to be able to offer unusual and unique items such as this for auction, watching as the enthusiasts and collectors fight it out. With its interesting provenance and sporting connections it’s unlikely we’ll see something quite like this come up again anytime soon.”

A Caterpillar Club brooch assigned to a Flying Officer in the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) has sold for ££1,173.92 at Fellows Auctioneers. Lot 4 in Fellows’ Fine Jewellery sale, which took place on Thursday 16 May, is the alluring gold brooch which had an estimate of £400 – £600. The brooch has “Sgt. FG. Spanner” engraved on the back – believed to be Sgt Frederick Gordon Spanner, who received several medals including the Distinguished Flying Cross for his service to the RCAF. Sgt Spanner, an efficient bomb aimer to assist his crew, was killed in action in 1943 during an attempt to bomb Berlin. He was enlisted whilst part of No.207 Squadron to leave RAF Langar with eight other members in the crew in an attempt to reach the German capital. Nothing was heard from the aircraft aside from there being reports of large clouds on route. Spanner, from Toronto, was awarded with a Distinguished Flying Cross, a War Medal 1939-1945, a 1939-1945 Star, an Air Crew Europe Star and the Caterpillar Club brooch. The Caterpillar Club brooch awarded to Sgt Spanner Caterpillar Club brooches were awarded to individuals who managed to escape falling aircrafts using a parachute. Spanner was known to have escaped disabled aircrafts on multiple occasions. In July 1941 he had to escape an aircraft near Dorking due to loss of fuel and in September 1941 his crew had to bail out over the UK due to engine failure. He was commended for his services at Runnymede Memorial in Surrey. Nicola Whittaker, Business Development Manager at Fellows Auctioneers, said: “We are delighted to have sold another Caterpillar Club brooch for auction at Fellows. When we sold one in December 2017 we were delighted that the story of Sgt. M. Skubiszewski came to light and we were able to honour his incredible bravery as part of the Polish Bomber Squadron during WWII and his years as a POW. It is incredible that the brooch found its way home due to the publicity before the auction. Just as that brooch went back to Poland, we knew that the same would happen with Sgt Spanner’s Caterpillar Club brooch. I think that the story resonated with the collectors. “Given the recent success we have had with military watches, it is clear that there is a lot of interest not only in these historically interesting pieces but also the stories behind them.”

We spoke to Oliver Horner of Fellows’ London office about his favourite item in Fellows’ upcoming Antique & Modern Jewellery sale: Of all the items in our upcoming Antique & Modern jewellery sale, Lot 568 is of particular interest to me.  This 19th Century diamond set brooch is punctuated with a sizable andalusite. From a historical aspect, this is an interesting choice as topaz would have typically been the preferential centre stone. The andalusite is a more unusual choice for the period. It’s not often you see this gem used in old period jewellery which enhances its appeal to me. Lot 568 – A late 19th century andalusite and diamond brooch. From a gemmological perspective, it is a stone that I particularly like.  When two colours are clearly seen in a gemstone when viewed at different angles, the optical phenomenon is referred to as Pleochroism. Andalusite is a pleochroic material, and this particular stone displays two very distinct colours. The delicate diamond surround instantly draws your eye to this centre stone and its fascinating colour effect. It’s a great early example of a jeweller perhaps using a lesser known gem for its optical allure, making it a remarkable and exciting little piece.
